The every year Snow thread

Published

I know every year someone posts a thread about the trials and tribulations of going to work in a snow storm. After 10 years in nursing I still dread the snow. Usually my hubby takes me to work and picks me up in snow storms. Now that we have a little one who is 1 year old those days are long gone. So now I have to decide on what I'm going to do this weekend when we are expected to get 8 to 10 inches Friday into Saturday. Do I book a hotel now close to work? Do I make arrangements the night before the storm to spend the night at work for my day shift the next day? Or do I just try my luck in the AM getting to work in one piece? Gah. My dream is to eventually convince hubby to move to an location where snow is rare or minimum. A girl can dream .

I just got a message from my home office. "We are just calling to confirm that your going to work tonight, but you can't call us back because we are leaving early because the snow started"

good to know the management is standing behind us field nurses. Mostly driving away from us at highway speed.

What kills me is when the manager a couple yrs ago didn't understand how a cna (45 min away) had to call in for the 3 ft of snow we got. "It was forecasted. You should have drove in ahead of the storm". Two days ahead? Snow came in Sat night, she wasn't scheduled until Mon morning, & when she headed out that morning to try to come in, police officers turned her around because roads were closed. But she should have planned ahead...

Sounds familiar...

I will add: Parents be like "they expect you to get to work in this weather?" Um, yes mom, we are essential personnel and the hospital is full. "Can't the nurses already working just stay and pick up your shift?" Work 24 hours straight without sleep?

I'm seeing 3 wounds tomorrow. They also have a SOC on my schedule, but that can be pushed off. She is stable.

Being a southern girl ain't gonna save you this weekend. I'm in SC and they are calling for 3-5 inches between tonight and the am. Yes it happens rarely but it still happens. Hope everyone is safe.

I'm down in New Orleans. We are cold but rarely rarely get snow or ice, thank goodness. When I graduate I'm going back to Florida. I'm a flip flops and sunshine kinda gal [emoji41]

Y'know ... back in my naive days, I was incredulous at the idea that the HOSPITAL didn't CARE about my plight of having a 1 hour and 20 minute drive to work in/of the night/morning of a blizzard (seriously, you can read my embarrassment on a prior post). And now that I've been in the game a minute, let me just say this ....

No one gives a rat's ass. And I don't say that to be mean, rude, or to ruffle feathers. It's just the sad reality. If they don't care about dumping a 6th, 7th, or 8th patient on you, then they damn sure don't care if you're driving in a white out for your shift.

The hospital needs nurses for reimbursements and they could care less about your commute. And honestly, I get it. The hospital has to run. It's a business. It doesn't shut down.

I'm all for calling out, but call out at your own risk, and understand the repercussions. Or, take it easy, drive slow, give yourself plenty of time, and drive roads that are commonly used. If all else fails, as everyone else has suggested, find an on-call room, or split a hotel with other snowed in co-workers. Just do your best. It's all anyone can ask.

See ya on the road tomorrow!

You know it. I doubt my region is bound for as much as some of the others, but even when it dumped our first sleet/snow storm and no one was prepared, I was up an hour and a half early for the trek in. It's life!

I thought as a School Nurse I would never have to deal again, but my second job in HH and dressings..ya gotta go. One was getting infected the other day, and she lives alone. I also have a vac.
