The economy and NP jobs....

Hi, I am a new grad FNP and am finding a lot of difficulties finding FNP jobs, in a family practice setting. I am thinking a large part of this has to do with the state of the economy. I have seen several job opening for specialties (neuro, pain management, rheumatology) but only one part time position in a family practice setting (I applied and am waiting to hear back...nothing yet). Are any other new grads encountering the same thing? And if so, whats your plan of action for attaining an NP job?

At this point it seems like the minute clinic is my best bet because I've already scheduled an interview with them and it seems promising. Or I can apply from some of the speciality positions but then again it still wouldn't be family practice. What to do? :(

i graduated in may and still dont have a job alot of the jobs want too many hours for the pay or part time. so i know what you mean. i am working as a RN and going to do a travel assignment for 6 months then work on getting a job as a NP.

Johnson, i saw you in the travel forum as well. I am going to do the same thing as you! i worked 3 months as a new NP and the job was not a good fit, so today was my last day. If i can't get a job as a travel NP i will start with travel RN.

PM me if you want and we can talk about it. I think i read you are doing travel for first time as well right?

you might end up liking specialty jobs. I was working in a Anesthesia dept. the job itself i LOVED, was working with kids which i love as well. I had some other issues why i didn't stay.

I think i may get into speciality like inpatient jobs, seem to often have better hours, be able to work 10 or 12 hour shifts, no call usually, don't take work home, etc..

Family practice has a lot of responsiblities, you take the work home, lot of on call, i think i want to do it for the experience but can't say i want to do it the rest of my life.

the great thing about FNP is you can switch around and have options for different fields.

Specialty practices are where the money is and at least in my area, where the jobs are too! I work in nephrology and there are three FNPs in this practice. With the number of primary care MDs decreasing quickly, you might want to consider some type of specialty practice.

Looking at the flipside of the economic downturn, a few clinics for the underserved are actually ramping up staff in anticipation of larger numbers of patients d/t job and insurance loss. Sad but true. Though if you want to work with this population it's an opportunity.

I love working with underserved populations. In fact, this is where I have been searching for jobs and I still haven't found any positions. My passion is to work with the underserved so each week I continue to look at the job listing from these clinics. Like you said, with the economy the way it is maybe they will start to open up more positions :D.

Thanks for all the great responses.

So sorry to hear your NP job did not work out for you. I am in the same situation as you. I've been at my NP job for 2 months now, and my last day is next Tuesday night. I am so glad I am leaving, but on the other hand, am worried about the future and what I will be doing next. The unknown scares me! :(

christvs,

what are your plans? I am sorry your job didn't work out-hope your next job is great!!! :)

Thanks. :) I am hoping to work in either Internal Medicine or Cardiology. I applied for 2 Cardiology NP positions, and several other ones....hopefully I will hear soon. It is driving me crazy not knowing what comes next. Plus...there are all the bills...

I am kind of tempted to work as a staff RN for a while, especially because I really miss where I used to work. Only problem is, I work in the same hospital now, as an NP, so it would probably be weird to go "backwards." I don't know what to do, I think I'm so tired right now from lack of sleep, and am stuck about what to do. I miss my co-workers, but do you all think it would be strange going from RN to NP back to RN all in the same hospital? Maybe I should just wait a little longer to hear back from all the NP jobs I applied to (and had one interview a week ago). I guess I am just impatient and am worried about how my mortgage and everything else is going to get paid, since my husband is not exactly making a lot of money. :( Why is life so stressful!

You might want to check to see if your employer would hire you as an RN now that you've worked as an NP. You are held to the standard of the highest license you hold. Which means that even though you would be an RN, you would be held, knowledge-wise to the level of the NP.
