I am considering going into the nursing or EMS field and to get some exposure I am going to participate as a third rider on our community's helicopter. Can you give me some advice on dos and donts for my first flight? Thanks!

Go to http://www.flightweb.com and go to their forum section. There are a lot more flight nurses on those forums than there are here.
Good luck and Have Fun

Just relax and have fun. The crew will stress to you the importance of safety and will do a orientation for you regarding the (do's and don't). Take it all in. See what the crew does when they are not flying, it will give you and overall feel for a typical day.
Have fun

ALWAYS walk around the aircraft from the front. NEVER walk around behind it where the tail rotor is. This was the first rule told to me.
Don't wear a hat unless it's tied on.
Try to sit forward-facing if you have a tendency to motion sickness.
Have fun.
Thank you all for your responses... the serious and the funny. :)

Wear layers of clothes, take a change with you. Don't wear anything that can be blown off. Don't put your hands above your head. ENJOY!!!

Dont throw up on any of the crew esp the pilot. :chuckle rj
Well, I did a 12 hour shift, and the only calls were transport calls, and I didn't go on those. The fire department didn't get any calls either, so it was a rather quiet day. I enjoyed talking to the crew and the firemen, however.
I hope to get the opportunity to get another shift soon, and I will remember all of your wonderful words of wisdom! :)

Bring a parachute if you plan on jumping out.
(I am just kidding here and I hope that I don't sound flip about it. This is a very serious field of medicine where safety comes first.) BTW, as a student pilot working on her private pilot's certificate, I'd give my eye teeth to be a 3rd rider. My dream job would be piloting rotocraft for LifeFlight, etc. The equipment they use has A LOT of speed and I'd enjoy putting it through it's paces. :)
Flight nursing isn't for me though... I really need to get a job when I'm finished and I'm concentrating on areas in which I'd have the best chance of getting a job.
