Skipping to from school to a fundraising event then back to school for open house - wore a dress with pink stripes for the occasion! Plus my sweater has a chicken with a pink beret on her head - I hope that counts!

Look at all the cool kids I missed last week. We were doing hearing screens all week and I didn't get a chance to check in. I actually can't even remember if I wore pink on Wednesday, LOL. Next up is vision screening in October. I hope you all have a good week.

Ya'll do hearing and vision separate?  Out of curiosity, where are you located?  I'm in Texas and we do our hearing, vision, and acanthosis screenings all at one time.

I'm in California. I assist my RN, who is the only CSN for all 6 school sites. We have 7-12 classes that are required to be screened at each school. It does takes us almost a full school day to do just hearing and complete the documentation. We have no coverage in the health offices on the day we do screenings, so we are occasionally called away to another site to attend a student. The RN then retests all the students that failed or were absent. How do you do all your screening in 1 day? it would be nice to get it out of the way at one time.

In the district I'm in now, our manager and two float nurses go campus to campus and do the initial screenings.  Here in TX we are required to screen KG, 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th (all of our schools are K - 12...mine's K - 9, adding 10 next year, 11 the year after, etc).  We also have to screen all new to district students who do not fall into one of those grade.  Since we have two nurses at this school, my co-nurse went to help with hearing screenings.  They were able to bang out 3, 5, and 7 plus some re-screens we needed.

The district I was at previously, we would get together in groups and go to different schools to do the screenings, leaving our schools without a nurse on campus but one on a nearby campus for emergencies.

We are preschool-6 grade. We test preschool, TK, K, 2, 5 and SDC classes. Definitely having more than 1 person and 1 assistant (me) doing screenings it would be faster, but unfortunately we are told "it's not in the budget" We can't even get part time health aids to help in the health offices. It's just the 2 of us for all 6 sites. The nurses from surrounding districts are not available to assist, so it makes it slow going. Since I'm an LVN I cannot actually do the screenings. I help with coordinating classes, student wrangling and documentation.

I'm in MA, and in the years we have not had a resource nurse, the building based nurses in our district (3 schools, 1 FT nurse in each school) get them done when we can. I used to try and "schedule" hour long blocks with the teachers to get them done, but that was a nightmare. Now, I just close my office for 2-3 days and get it done. Our enrollment is way down this year, so I think I'll be able to get everything but posturals done in 2 days or less... The hardest part is finding a quiet space for the hearing screenings.....

Wow!  Here in Texas our health/clinic aids can do the screenings.

Also, we have Lions Club come in and do the KG and 1st grades - they do the SPOT screener for 5 and under and use the HOTV chart for the rest.  If you can, I would definitely contact your local Lions Club to see if they can help - it's a great asset and it's free!
