That Johnson & Johnson commercial!!!!!!!!!!!

Nurses General Nursing

Published

So I am sitting in my living room, watching TV and eating lunch when the "Become a Nurse" commercial from J & J comes on.

And I am annoyed by it!.

I changed the channel. But that got me thinking about the content of the ad. While I am happy that the company is doing its part to help ease the shortage, the silly song is a big turn-off to me. "They dare to care" You see nurses briefly talking about nursing.. " I can't have a bad day... " Oh, come on! How realistic is that?. EVERYONE has bad days, no matter what profession you are in. Anyway, that is just part of the reason why it annoys me.

I can recall an ad years ago, that helped in my decision in becoming a nurse..

Its main theme was, "Do you have what it takes to be a nurse?, do you enjoy the challenge of studying anatomy, physics, chemistry...etc... it also showed nurses in high-stress situations "running the show"....

I wonder what happened to that commercial?

I am going to write J & J and offer some (unsolicited) advice. At least change that silly song.

Is anyone else annoyed by the song in the commercial? content?

I have yet to see an ad directed at future doc's with sentimental, mushy music.... the AMA would have none of that .

I must respectfully disagree with some of the feedback in this post.

As long as the attitude in our profession is one of complacency, and the "oh, well at least we are on the tube..." or "give it a rest already" or "what a picky post", or " nursing school is not as hard as medical school" we are not going to make any progress in any area(s) that affect our profession. Whether it is mandatory OT, pay, etc....

I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to learn from professors who do give a hoot about what happens to our profession and how it is portrayed in the media. They drilled into our heads that we have a voice and we should use it.

It concerns me that we tell each other to not "rock the boat".

Thank heavens for those that came before us, who DID "ROCK THE BOAT"

If it weren't for them, we would still be asking permission to check our patient's vital signs with doctors.

I like that commercial......and although I wanted to go back to school for nursing before seeing the commercial, it made me feel good about my decision.

I think you need to relax and find other things to be annoyed at....there are things being aired on TV that are much more upsetting than this commercial!

If you like the commercial, that's fine. You have a right to your opinion.

But, who are you to tell me to "relax"?.

I have a right to be annoyed by it. I make no apologies.

I love to exchange ideas, but I don't like rudeness.

I, like many others here, care about how our profession is portrayed. I assume you care about it as much as I do. I am willing to give you the benefit of the doubt. Perhaps, what you see on TV about nursing and real life is not of great importanceto you, but to me... it is.

I like the commericial but I am smart enough to realize it is unrealistic.

regarding the "form letter" it is known in the trade as the 'BEDBUG LETTER"

Haven't seen it.....

regarding the "form letter" it is known in the trade as the 'BEDBUG LETTER"

Isn't that the "one letter = x amount of letters" from the public in advertising.?? I recall my ethics professor mentioned this in class but it has been 2 years... I can't recall the number.

Thanks for letting us know the correct terminology.

I appreciate it.

I like it too, but then I seem to be one of the few on this board who actually like and are fulfilled by being a nurse.

Heck,

I even like the little jingle that goes with it!:)

Presenting a profession in a positive light does not mean it's unrealistic.

Exactly how much stuff do you think they can get into a 30 sec. commercial?

And I'd much rather have the positive side of our profession shown than the negative.

Does this mean I am a Polly-Anna about nursing?

No. I understand the problems and have made a point to be part of the group working to solve our issues instead of just griping about them. I strongly believe we nurses spend way too much time with negative talk and much too little on creating solutions to our issues.

If this commercial presents nursing in a positive light and makes people think about choosing nursing as a career then all the more better!

I'm surprised by the depth of feeling this thread has generated. I kind of like the commercial, I agree it is superficial and unrealistic, and I don't really care. I'm more concerned with wages, benefits, staffing ratios, respect, professional treatment esp from MDs, and patient safety. Frankly I don't have the energy to get carried away about a commercial.

I also watch very little TV, so maybe I underestimate the effect commercials have on the public?

Heck,

I even like the little jingle that goes with it!:)

I cannot stand that song!!! >> There are several commercials out there that I will either hit the mute button or change the channel as soon as they come one. This is one of them. Thank goodness it doesn't play much anymore.

Is there somewhere I can see this online? I sometimes need to test my gag reflex.
