Texas Tech-Accelerated BSN Spring 2020

Published

I haven't seen a thread for those of us applying May 1st to the January 2020 cohort. I'm wondering how heavily they weigh the TEAS. Also, I have heard as long as you meet all criteria they typically give you an interview. Has anyone else heard this? I really like how they take a holistic approach to grant admissions. I'm wanting to apply to UTA but I feel like the main way you get extra points is by attending school there which I did not do! We'll see!

I’m applying to the 2021 cohort in Austin and am trying to get a loose idea of what a typical week looks like to start planning for childcare.

1. Does anyone still have a schedule for the required in-person classes/sims/labs/exams?

2. Do you schedule your own clinical hours?

3. How much of it can be scheduled on your own time as opposed to having a set time already assigned to it?

Thanks to anyone who can pass along advice or help regarding schedules! I’m sure things have been impacted by Covid and there’s likely not a “normal” but anything helps ?

Hello! For anyone currently in the Dallas 2020 cohort, do you mind if I contact you to get a little more information about your experience? I have applied to 2021 program and would love to ask some specific questions as I plan things out for next year.

Reposting my reply on the 2019 forum here...

Here are the schedules for Austin's Spring and Summer 2020:

Clinicals are dependent on your coach's schedule. Some coaches have very regular schedules; other's irregular. You'll need to average 1.5 clinical shifts per week to satisfy the 225 hours needed. It's best to front load as much as you can as you never know when your school schedule aligns with your coaches.

We have a handful of moms in the Austin cohort. I'll ask them to chime in with their thoughts.

Thank you! I just sent you an email!

@atxmitch Thank you! I’ll respond here since it’ll probably get more views vs the 2019 thread. I’ve been reviewing the course documents and wanted to clarify- are any of the classes taught in person or in live real-time webinars? Or are the classes themselves totally online and self paced?

All classes except Basic Skills are online and fundamentally self paced. Clinicals are obviously in-person at your assigned hospital. If you look at the AustinCalendar pdf, it will show you when/where we were required to show up in-person for exams, reviews, study sessions, clinical conferences, etc. Red is at TX Tech's Classroom @ Centre Park (183 & Rutherford); Blue is at Clinical Education Center @ Dell Seton.

@atxmitch Very nice! Did you have any input as to which hospital you were assigned?

If you are planning childcare the age of your kiddos and your budget. My kids are school age so I didn't need childcare until quarantine started? but now daycamps don't open until June 1st. So my best advice would be havr a plan a,b,c,d,e,f.....

Yes, the faculty try to place you based on your location and availability of coaches. For example, I have 4 classmates who live along Riverside - 2 were assigned to Dell Seton, while the other 2 to St David's South.

@atxmitch that makes sense. Long-term I’d love to work at Dell Seton but I live in SW Round Rock so I wonder if they take preference into account or just location. I really appreciate all your responses. I’m excited to get my application in!

@bjensen4 Definitely. We don’t have family in town but both sets of grandparents are about two hours away so we can rely on them in a pinch. Will definitely be looking into hiring a nanny close to full time to look after my circus! ?

One more question - where did everyone do their medical terminology course and did you have to pay for it? I completed a course for free online back in 2015 but I can’t find the documentation anywhere to figure out who it was through to do again and everywhere I’m finding now charges a fee for a certificate.
