I'm not in Houston, but I've been living in the Dallas/Fort Worth area for the past 8 years and worked as an LVN from 2006 until earning my RN license in 2010.
LVNs in the area earn anywhere from $16 to $29 hourly. Hospitals and clinics pay the absolute worst, while agency, private duty, HH, hospice, and LTC pay the best.
Unfortunately, 20 years of experience does not result in more pay at many companies around here. In many facilities, the LVN with 20 years of experience is earning the exact same hourly rate as the nurse with 1 to 3 years of experience.
We're called licensed vocational nurses (LVNs) here in Texas.
Nalon ^^^^^ is correct - LVNs have very limited acute care opportunities in the Houston metro area.
I would also encourage you to begin the process of obtaining your Tx LVN license ASAP. You may encounter difficulties due to the lack of LP/VN program standardization. If so, you will need enough time to take care of this because employers will not take you seriously unless you have your Tx license.
I work about 45 min north of Houston, and make $21.50/hr + $1.00 shift differential for 2-10 in a LTC facility. I have 6 yrs exp. I also endorsed from another, non-compact state. After paying fees and turning in my application, I had a temp license in about a week with no problems. I've heard LTC's pay a little better closer to and in Houston.
According U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and LVN Salary, the salary is around $25 per hour, so I think you can make $28-$30 hourly.
As long as you have passed the NCLEX and have a clear background you should not have a problem endorsing. I actually started my paperwork on 7/6 and today 8/20 I have full licensing in the state of Texas. I have seen lots of jobs for LVNs on indeed and what not and I have seen plenty of job postings on hospital websites. While they are nothing compared to openings for RNs, there is still quite a few. I do think it might be wishful thinking to expect 25-28/hr here in the state of Texas though... Not that many RNs are making that much. Well wishes to you!

Looking at the possibility of moving from Minnesota to Houston Texas. In this year of 2013 does anyone know what they pay LPN with 20+ years of experience?
