U.S.A. Texas

Hi am an Lpn with 3 years experience I am currently in RN school and will be done Dec 2013. I currently live in Louisiana and plan on moving to Dallas after graduation so I wanted to know what is starting pay in Dallas and which hospitals pay best. Thanks

Specializes in Case mgmt., rehab, (CRRN), LTC & psych.

Most hospital systems in the Dallas area will start a new grad RN off in the $22.50 to $25.00/hourly range. A few hospital systems might grant credit for your LPN experience, bringing the starting pay up to about $26 or $27 per hour at the most.

Even with your LPN experience, be cognizant that competition for new grad hospital jobs is fierce in this area. It is normal for each hospital job posting to receive several hundred applications. Everyone (and their mama) has been relocating from around the US to the Dallas area for some odd reason. Good luck to you.

Hi thanks for your response. That starting pay isn't bad it's way better than Louisiana. It seems like Dallas is the place to be.

Pay is higher here, but keep in mind that the cost-of-living is also higher. Rents, real estate, and utilities are more expensive here in the D/FW area than they are in Louisiana. Therefore, it all evens out.

I have heard that a general rule of thumb is every 2 years of LVN experience gets you credit for 1 year RN experience......anybody know if that holds true?

Depends on who hires you. Some places only look at RN experience no matter what.

A lot of places will not count LVN experience at all for some reason.

If you really want to make money move to Houston and work in the medical center. I work at BTGH and was started off at $26.65 then we received a market adjustment to $27.50 (which is what all interns now start off at). And after my one year I now make $31.08/hr with just 1 year! I am currently on the job search in Dallas b/c my husband got a promotion and seeing these low hourly wages are is making me sad! Not to mention Dallas is so much more expensive than Houston. They really need to pay nurses according to the cost of living. $25/hr is ABSURD!

Hospital systems in the Dallas area have absolutely no incentive to raise their pay rates to mesh with the prevailing cost of living here. As long as this area is glutted with far too many nurses of all experiential levels, the wages will remain low.

Supply and demand is the name of the game. When too many nurses are on the supply side of the equation, the hospital systems can continue to suppress the hourly pay.

SO for two weeks you made $3500? that's $1750/week?? What exactly is your pay per hour? Are you working overtime every week?
