Advice For The New Nurse Entering Med-Surg
Don't get so hung up on passing medications. I understand that some medications are time sensitive, but if the pharmacy profiles your sliding scale insulin for 1130 but lunch trays are late and don't show up until 1300 you insulin will just be late. Make a note reflecting that. I see too many of our new nurses and even nursing students so fixated on timing that they are unable to make adjustments when unexpected things happen. ASSESS your patients first thing! If you become so fixated on passing the meds that you haven't assessed your patient until after med pass, I guarantee you that's when something will change with your patient or the physician will ask you how their lungs sounded and you won't have a baseline. BE FLEXIBLE. Nothing in the nursing real world works quite the same as the nursing books taught you. And when you think the world is crumbling around you, take a deep breath. I promise your more than likely doing a better job then you think you are. And find an appropriate healthy method of stress relief outside of work. Reading, exercise etc.

Precepting
I have recently been asked to precept a new nurse to our facility. Although the nurse is new to our facility, they are not a new nurse. I understand that the computer/charting system is different at each and every facility so I have been focusing a lot of teaching on this process. Now, however I have begun to get frustrated that my orientee has caught on to some of the charting and I am trying to show them additional things, such as checking the charts for orders and I have to remind them several times to check your charts! Also, I guess that being an experienced nurse, I didn't expect to have to tell my preceptee certain things. For example, if you medicated the patient for pain and 1 hour later the patient is requesting additional pain medication you have two choices: explain to patient pain med is not available for 3 hours and offer non-pharm solutions or call the doctor for additional meds. Any suggestions on how to 'push' my orientee to spread their wings and fly........because they are 'experienced' their orientation days are limited.

Is this the same as their listed RN Resident? How long does it usually take for Parkland to hire? Do they contact you and let you know if you aren't being considered?

New Grad ADN with LVN Experience
Although I am officially 'new' to the site, I have been reading the forum often. Do you have plans to go back for your BSN? I am planning to start in the fall. I really enjoy Acute Rehab, it is really rewarding to see the patients make progress, teach their families, etc. But sometimes I wonder if I might enjoy another specialty? I know to increase my chances of trying something new the BSN is probably my best bet.

Any San Antonio LVN's here?
I worked in a San Antonio area hospital until recently as an LVN. I had approx 4 years experience when I started and my pay was less than $17/hr.

New Grad ADN with LVN Experience
Hi! I am an new graduate ADN with 7 years LVN experience in Med/Surge, LTC, and acute rehab, and recently moved to the Dallas area due to marriage. Question- what are my best options for employment? I have applications out to numerous hospitals, and I have hospital experience. But I am not unrealistic and I realize a majority of hospitals want a BSN educated nurse. So, I am ok with working a non-hopsital job while I complete my BSN and then re-evaluating. Suggestions? Pay scales? Words of advice on how to negotiate pay rate given my LVN experience? Thanks!

Opinions on Parkland's "nursing shortage"?
I am a new ADN graduate with 7 years of LVN experience and I have submitted 4 applications to Parkland and haven't heard anything yet. I know that most hospitals want BSN graduates and I am starting the BSN program in the fall. Hoping to hear something soon.
