Temple College 2015

Published

Hello, I just wanted to start a thread for those of us applying for the LVN or RN programs at Temple College for 2015. We can share information, discuss any concerns, talk about the HESI exam, getting cleared through the Board of Nursing, or the just nursing program in general! Those of you that are already in the program are more than welcome to chime in.

PLEASE NOTE: I am in no way taking responsibility for any wrong information given, nor will I moderate this thread. I just want to meet new friends and support one another through the process of applying and getting our acceptance letters!

My 2 cents...

-They want to select the students they feel will have they greatest chance of success in this degree plan. GPA is a pretty good indicator of the likelihood of success, and the HESI was designed to be a indicator of success as well.

-A Bachelors IMO shouldn't put you ahead of anyone else that applied. Especially if it is in a completely different field.

-Letters of Recommendation/personal letter as was mentioned above seems unnecessary to me

-I am surprised they didn't do a short interview though

- GPA in general is a good indicator of success, but most of the classes they are using to calculate the admission GPA aren't even science/nursing classes. Basic English, two psychology courses (one is intro), and an elective course makes up 12 hours they use. And then up to 8 hours of A&P. If this mostly basic level college coursework is a strong indication of success in the program, I would think a bachelor's degree (120+ hours worth of similar and mostly more advanced coursework, even if it's not in nursing) is an even better indication. I don't think it should be an automatic leg up, but I don't agree that it doesn't show any more likelihood of success. Lots of people start degrees but finishing one, associates level and higher, requires a lot of dedication, an invaluable characteristic in nursing school, from what I've been told over and over.

- Personally, I kind of thought the HESI was a joke. The math is middle school level, and the reading/vocab sections were similar. It's fine that they use it, but I really don't think those six basic courses for GPA and this basic math and reading test trump including additional personal info.

- Why do they seem unneccessary? Consider everyone in this thread. Our numbers are all pretty similar. Do you really think the people with the highest numbers should get a spot, bar none? You wouldn't like to say something about yourself and why you chose nursing and how dedicated you are, etc? Good grades shows you're smart but it doesn't necessarily indicate dedication or passion or willingness to work with others, etc.

- An interview would have been great, too. It seems like all of the bigger, better nursing schools I have looked into require more and more items for the application, including letters of recommendation, interview etc. I think that in itself says something.

I think the reason they go by the numbers and don't require or take into account personal statements or references is so that the process is objective and fair. At least that away everyone has a fair chance. With personal statements and references then the process becomes subjective and potentially unfair.

In my opinion, it would be more fair with the subjective criteria. The objective information is very important, but when it comes down to splitting hairs with students that are equally capable intellectually, it seems logical to turn to other aspects of the applicants that could only be conveyed through subjective measures.

I think all our numbers are similar because by all being on here we are showing a very important characteristic needed in this field. We have tried to gather as much info as possible obviously the people in this thread are go getters and are gonna be at the cream of the crop IMO :). Like I said a short interview would have been great by me. Getting a degree shows persistence but is it relative? You dont need a bachelors or an associates to apply to an associates level program, and they have recently cut out more of the prereqs and it was not their choice. How I see it the medical field has always been my first choice and I dont think some one with a bachelors in something completely different should be placed ahead of me because they decided to get an associates. I do see where you are coming from, but I think we will all get in IMO. All those things that where easy to you if you look around these forums was not very easy for a lot of people.

I have the whole week out of school, so I have little to do besides obsess over my application status. How are the rest of you holding up? I have the patience of a 2 year old....

Lol I've been checking for it everyday for like the past week even though I know damn well that it's not going to be in there. I have a friend who also applied, she told me that they're supposed to mail out applications on the 20th but I don't know how accurate that is. I've been told to look for them on the last week of May/first week of June

*letters of acceptance, not applications*

I am going on a trip next week and I won't even be home to check my mailbox obsessively. When we all get to orientation, I will be asking around for my allnurses.com friends! Stay positive, everyone!

But to be honest I'm not really too impressed with TC's selection process for the ADN program. I went in last week to turn in updated transcripts and the lady I spoke to (forgot her name) told me that I should start looking into a back-up plan. What I took away from our conversation is that I don't stand much of a chance because I don't have all A's (3.55 overall GPA), I don't live in Temple and my HESI score isn't the highest (88) and I didn't think that my stats were that bad. But luckily TC wasn't the only place I applied.

Did any of you guys apply elsewhere?

On the Temple Nursing voicemail it says acceptance letters will be mailed out the 25th and all other communication (wait list, not making the cut) would be by email. So here is to hoping I don't have email from them next Monday :/

I have not applied anywhere else (even though I live closer to CTC). Temple College has been good to me. So, really mailed out on Tuesday since Monday is a holiday? What's a day though?!?!

I did not apply anywhere else yet but in the middle of applying to CTC as well, just in case Temple doesn't work out.

So we'll pretty much know by the 25th huh?
