Temple College ADN/LVN 2014

Published

I noticed that there has not been a 2014 topic started yet for the Temple College nursing programs. I am getting nervous and want to know if there is anyone out there applying for the same year I am. I will be applying for the ADN and LVN program. So far I have all my pre and co-requisites completed with a 3.76 GPA. I will be taking my hesi test this October, and I also live IN-district. I am nervous and losing sleep over whether or not my scores will be good enough!

Its ok Angela! I didnt go straight through, and I am so glad I didn't. I never had problems finding jobs, and I have so much experience now, that I am grateful to have done LVN first. You had CNA experience, but I had nothing. So literally being an LVN was so scary for me. I couldn't have imagined myself in the RN shoes until I felt 100% comfortable with things I was doing. I can't tell you how much working at the VA has taught me. (and prior to that, being a baby nurse, I learned so much it was UNREAL!)

To this day, I am one of the best IV stickers on my floor. RN's come get me to do them all the time. I had to show an RN how to put down an NG tube the other day, she had been a nurse 11 years. I knew how because I did it on babies. And, me and a few of the other LVNs on the floor have to retrain the newer grad RNs how to do things the right way. When I finally felt prepared to go back to school, every RN I asked to write a letter of rec for me put in there that I was BEYOND qualified for RN school, as I am more knowlegable than most of the staff on the floor.

I can't stand when people put down LVNs. It boils my blood. Nurses are nurses. PERIOD. Some of us couldnt afford to go straight through. And even the ones who could, chose not to in order to gain experience. We are all working towards a common purpose; to take care of patients.

So please don't let anyone make you feel ashamed or bad that you are going to LVN school first. I would never let anyone downgrade me for chosing to do so. I owe all of my knowledge and skills to being an LVN. I feel 100% confident in going back to school now.

And another thing, you can usually always tell those of us who worked our way up. Alot of people who go straight thru RN act as if they are better, and always make horrible assignments for us LVN's. The ones that started from the bottom like we did, always seem to be fair, and can relate to things LVNs do. And they never act as if they are better than us.

I gotta say, that is not ALWAYS the case. I love love love most of the people I work with. There are a few of them that act better, but for the most part, we are all usually treated fair. Especially my evening shift people. Once you graduate, you should try to come up to the VA and work with us! We have the best floor ever!! Right Jordan?!

Cocoa, once you are in school, they have "SNT" positions available. You can work at S&W or the VA. The pay is really good too. 18 something an hour. And you can work 3-4 days a week. That way you can gets hands on experience AND still study. We love our SNTs. They always bring their books and do homework too.

Oh perfect ang thanks for the heads up!!!

So we have Fridays off at Taylor campus that's perfect for me bc I'm thinking I can work 12 hrs Friday then maybe 12 Saturday as well. I work over night so I'm wondering if I could still work nights and go to school.

I retook my hesi and made the same score. After talking with my husband, I decided to just go into the vn program :) I don't think I can handle the RN stress right now, especially being so far away from Hutto. Financially, the vn will be amazing, and I can stay at my current job Friday and Saturday. I think overall it is a good choice, I don't even know if I should apply for the RN at this point with my doubts. Summer-Is it possible to bridge immediately to the rn after graduating vn or do I have to gain experience first?

Maddy, the bridge program will take the 2 highest GPA's of the LVN program that apply to go through the bridge. Other than that you have to go get at least 6 months full time experience before you can apply. The bridge also has more pre - reqs than the LVN and RN program. Hope this helps!

PS. Yes, Summer Blessing I do think we work on a pretty great floor. ;)

Just wanna clarify.. it has more pre-reqs WHEN you apply as a bridger... (micro, a&p 1&2, psych, psych growth and development, and eng comp 1)... because if you went straight thru the RN program, those are factored into your first year. And as a bridger, you start at the second year of RN school.

And yes! As Jordan said, they will take the 2 highest GPA's from the LVN class. (usually its one from Taylor and one from Temple.)

and LVN's make more than most people think.. Starting out now is around 18-19 an hour. (btw you should still apply to the RN program.. you never know what oppurtunities may arise, and if you dont apply, you could miss the oppurtnunity if it were to come!)

Cocoa, i hope your schedule works out, i may do the same for fri and sat :) Summer, thanks for the positive reinforcement haha. I honestly dont feel ashamed to not be in a position to apply for the adn as well, i wouldnt know what to do with it. But i do think if yall already have the classes to apply- it wouldnt hurt to put your name in the hat. I want to stick with home health in some ways so maybe that will cease some of the RNs with big heads. I know when i started off as a caregiver, the cnas thought they were better. When i got my cna, it was the MAs that felt superior and so on and so forth. I learned to pay no mind, at first it hurt my feelings and then when i saw a cna walk pass a resident that was obviously soiled, i thought "wow, what a waste of a certification" lol ..so..i guess i may need to work on not being quick to be a smartass haha. Yalls letters arrival date is approaching fast! I know this becauae its the aame count down to my math final i believe that i am dreading haha. Hope everyone is well.

Wow that is awesome that they actually take someone straight through. I have all of my classes, pre and co Reqs. All I have to take are the nursing courses. Looks like I gotta be super smart and be the one that goes through! I probably will still apply, I just think the vn will help us out financially and because it's in Taylor, it's 10-15 min from my house. I think my biggest goal is to get my foot in the door and start working in the field regardless of the program route I go. 18-19 an hour is a good startiing point for sure until I can go theory to the rn.

I went to the Vn office today at Taylor and talked to the secretary there for a while. Out of 100 people that were eligible for the Taylor program, only 23 got in. We should feel special Cocoa!!! I also asked about the 1 person they send to the RN program and they said they didn't do that. The simulation lab classroom they have in the back is so awesome!!!!
