Ok, I graduated May 08, couldn't find a job in the Bay Area (CA) but got a job offer up in Northern California in a rural hospital in a city I adore. I interviewed, they gave me an offer contingent on drug test which I recently took. Upon emailing Nurse Manager the other day they want me to start November 15, 2008.
Questions - Don't I have to get a clean slate from the tox screen first? They said they'd let me know results (which should be fine) within 2-14 days. It's been about a week.
Do I need another written offer or if the tox screen is clear that offer is "good"?
They know I am moving 3 hours to their location and have two children. One major obstacle I am dealing with is that I am awaiting a large sum of money (that should have came in last month!) to pay for my family's move, new rental house, deposit, movers, etc. My money has to come in soon but I do not know exactly when as insurance companies keep saying the check is in the mail!! So, do I tell the nurse manager that I am awaiting monies to pay for my move and will keep her posted?
Obviously, this is a small hospital that I really want to work at. I have been honest with them about everything else but I do not want to appear to have problems and they have to "wait" for me - new grad positions are so hard to come by around here! Orientation is Nov 15.... Do you believe a smaller hosp will work with me if the money does not come in?
Arggg, Can you tell I do not like waiting for other people to do their jobs (the insurance people). I want to move now and start working!
Yes this is my first nursing job ever.
I know i'll tell her, just need to know I am doing this right.
I've checked out the rural nursing tab on allnurses as well. Any guidance in this area - Thanks.

I'd call the insurance company Monday morning and ask to speak to a manager to get the facts about when the check was sent and how. It should have been sent directly to you and required you sign for it if was a large amount. Don't let them put you off. I'd do that first as you still might be able to start on 11/15.

I'm about 5 hours north of SF and work in a rural hospital and we'd wait for you. :heartbeat
Tell her the truth. I am sure she will work with you.
Good luck! If you want, pm me the location as I've worked in places 3 hours from SF.

most jobs are contingent upon the drug screen results. If there was a problem, you probably would have heard something by now. So, :ancong!: on your new job.

Call the insurance company and find out exactly when it will be mailed. The longer they hold it, the more interest they get on it. So they may not be in a hurry to mail it out. California has a state insurance board also that you can mention to them or call if you need to.
Thank you so much for all the quick replies. You all are really great! I will look into everything on Monday, and talk with the hospital recruiter after I find out where the heck my $ is!
(I think living surrounded by boxes and being ready to move but not being able to really bummed me out!) Thanks for the pep talk, I needed it!
I'll let you know how awesome it all turns out!

Hey Elprup, I am also 1hr north of SF and just got a position 2 hrs north of me! Sounds like we're almost in the same area. I too graduated in May and this will be my first position. It took so long to get that job that I can understand you're not wanting to rock the boat. But the key thing here is YOU GOT THE JOB. It is a good policy to state the facts and be up front just b/c that is the way you are going to be throughtout your entire job.
B/C I live 2 hours away from the job- some of my issues will be if I should move up there or just tuff it out and drive home. It's still early in the game yet for both of us so good luck. PM me to see if we are going to be in the same area!
Hey Elprup, You PM-ed me but I can't seem to do it back. I thought I was computer savy but this has me baffled. I am going to a hospital straight up 101 but I have a good friend that graduated with me and works over where you are going. She loves it there. If I figure out the PM thingy I'll tell you more. thanks cherie
ELPRUP, how did it turn out?
Thank you for remembering me.
So I called the insurance and found out why it was taking so long! (Long story, but my spouse passed away 5 months ago, we were separated, not divorced, we have 2 kids....and I was beneficiary to his insurance). Well the problem holding up these monies are his Mother! She's been saying that she is the wife and telling them we were divorced, so they had to get all of our court records and go through them, which were many! Arrgg I am so mad. (and our children are her only grandchildren!)
So I set everything straight, lady helping me was very understanding and put a rush on getting my check(s) : ) out. The day after our phone conversation I got a letter stating what exactly the kids and I are getting and when (Before the end of this month).
I did tell my employer that I was awaiting funds for my move and she was understanding and said to keep in touch and just let her know.
I am pretty opitismistic that the money will come in just in time for us to choose a rental house up there and move. Everything is pretty much packed, we have access to a truck and help. Maybe I can start Nov 15th!
as I have to start paying my loans!
Boy I cannot wait to get out of the city and far away from his mother, she'll be 7 hours away from us when we move!
take care all, i'll be moving soon and finally start working!

She sounds like a real doozy. Isn't that illegal, what she did?
Yep totally illegal... His mom has done so many other things I cannot even begin to explain. My kids are really angry with her. To go to court, it would be a long civil battle that I would rather just walk away from. (Although I did file my ex's classic car as stolen because I hold the title and registration & she refuses to return the car - she took it from his residence less than 24 hours after his unexpected death). So, if she ever tries to drive it, or re-register it, cops will descend on her. My son was promised this car when he turned 16 by his dad so I really want to get it back for him.
I believe in Karma and his mom will get hers. She obviously is not happy with her life now and has lost her only grandkids over this. Pretty sad.
