ok, i am a nurse of almost 5 years and went to an open house to get into the ER well since I have been in management in LTC and med surg they wont take me..BUTTTTTT they will take the new grad with NOOOOO experience. No offense to new grads b/c i was there too..but why is this? do they think they can mold them into being what they want ???HELP:angryfire
I always advice new grads to get med/surg experience first - to learn all the time management and critical thinking skills - and still think its the best way to go. But makes me wonder if I shouldn't have taken the new grad. offer to train in OR when I had the chance. Won't get it now! Grrrr!
This experience has invalidated your argument about Med/Surg first, then move to other areas. It didn't work out for you to go that route first. I do agree with you that more experienced nurses should be getting those positions in the ICU, NICU etc. I'm sure that hospitals don't want to pay for anyone who has more experience, so they go for new grads.
These are all good arguments to go for the area you want and not get stuck in general Med/Surg (unless that's what you want to do).
;)same here...I resigned to my recent job( b4 teaching med surg) bcoz of that anomaly?????

yeah, i understand what you're saying. my fear is what happens if you go for, say, o.r. or e.r. - do it for years, then want to change to another area. are you gonna be able to?
just a shame one has to be boxed into any one area. as someone said, they don't tell you this in nursing school.

I will say that I've been an ER nurse for almost 10 years though and the only reason I have opportunities at this point is that I decided to return to school for an advanced degree. Pretty sad state of affairs.
