This may seem like a silly question, but I would really like a serious answer.
Thanks!!! :hottub:

I have pondered this many years!!! Nurses use math but it's nursing math. I have yet to apply quadratic equations to my patient care. It is stupid, so many nurses are needed but that is one hard subject that stumpts many people.

So the powers above can torture us legally?:chuckle
I've always wondered as well, probably has something to do with the "correct" way of working out dosage calculations...

Algebra includes ratios, which you need to convert things and perform certain drug dosage calculations.
Don't let math scare you - that's half the battle!
I am very scared of math, but this semester I have a great teacher and they are doing a new computer system at school and I feel so good about taking math this semester, like I actually have a chance. So dont give up if you are faced with it ... You can do it!!!!

perhaps for the dosage calculations and it is also used in chemistry which is another required course for nursing.
Thank you very much ladies. I am in Beginning Algebra now and math have always been a problem for me. I want so badly to become a nurse. I have never had a problem in any other prereq class although some have had me scratching my head, hence Pathogenic Biology. Someone listed a math website that may come in handy so my plans are to check into that today.
Thanks again.

I don't know why, but I hate math. I let math scare me many times from starting school. I struggled with it. I don't know why. I can figure out any dosage calculation if I have the meds in front of me, put it on paper and I am sunk! I always double check my math with a co worker or pharmacy though just to be sure.

The TYPE of logic used in algebra is applied to more than just math and drug dose calculation. You may not do equations in nursing, but someone who can is more likely to posess the ability to examine differential diagnoses while assessing a patient.
It's a weeding tool.

We have to learn Algebra, History, English, etc.....because as part of a proper education, these subjects make you a well-rounded person. That's what I've always been told. I'm sure it's true but it seems like more of a money maker for the school to me.

Ahh.....I never thought about it this way.

I was a pediatric nurse for years and used algebra to calculate drug doses on a daily basis. All doses were based on weight. Now that I care for adults I don't use it often - once in awhile.
