hi
i am taking the teas test feb.25, 2008 at ivy tech.
does anyone have any advice for me?
~thanks~
Kimsbratz: Where are you from? You should call up ATI testing to see if they have dedicated sites that offer TEAS testing. I went to one in Southern Cali (Rio Hondo CC) and took it. They actually offer it 4 days outta the week and at multiple times each day. That way, you can probably still make your deadline without having to wait until June. AND! Get a study guide, those things help alot. Doesn't even have to be ATI, I used Kaplan and my score jumped 15-20 pts!
I'm in Indiana. I studied for days, even went to testpreview website and done the practice tests over and over. I've heard a lot of people say the Kaplan book helped, thank you for letting me know. I'm going to get the Kaplan book as soon as I can. I'm scheduled to take the test again next month so I will have plenty of time to study. Hopefully, I'll pass and move on with my goals.
Well, just finished the teas test with a score of 85.3. I'm not too happy about that. I did pretty bad on the math (75% or something) and science (~80%)
My test was pretty much the same stuff as in the ATI study manual... some of the questions were almost identical in the science section.
Well, I guess everyone is different...
The math portion (99%) was super easy to me - but only had a few minutes to spare. Just refresh your memory on fractions and percentages. Oh, another thing to refresh on would be metric conversions. Also, calculators are NOT allowed, so everything is longhand.
Reading (98%) was very easy as well - they had a lot of "read the following paragraph and answer the questions". Questions would include "what is the main idea of this story". Many are just really making sure you have good comprehension.
English (88%) was a little more challenging. They have ALOT of "replace part of the sentence with the correct phrase". This may be to replace a misspelled word, capitalization, grammar usage, sentence structure, words in correct context, or punctuation.
Science (76%) was really hard to me! I hate to say that - it should have been what I performed best in! I got A's in Chem - both A & P classes and a B in Micro....ARGH!!!! For the science portion, the general science, chem science, and physical science really killed me. Some of the things I had never heard of....others, it's just been a few years. The other sections for science are 1) scientific reasoning 2) life science and 3) body science - I didn't have a problem with these.
I wasn't worried about the test AT ALL until I took it the first time and passed with flying colors on all sections, except for the science - man, that killed me! I missed to pass line by ONE question for the science section! So, I took it again....and passed. I really feel like I need a refresher in the science area, though!
GL to you!
Lisa
btw, I don't feel like the study guides helped AT ALL with the area I needed help in.
Lisa,
Thank you for your breakdown of the Teas test. I am also a 4.0 student in Chem and A & P ( have yet to take Micro). This test concerns me because I have heard that they ask quite a few questions that are on the life sciences...good grief, I took that in 7th grade!
How would you recommend getting the refresher on the sciences? I was going to buy the ATI study guide but if you didn't find it helpful maybe I won't waste my money.
Also, it has been many years since I took Math. I recently took Statistics, but that's different. I am worried that I will have some problems in the Math area..was the study guide focused on that, or not really?
Thanks for your help!

I had a friend who had the workbook, so I did look at. It would be helpful if you need a math refresher. Math has always been easy for me (I loved the stoichiometry problems - lol!). The tricky thing about the math for a lot of people, is the amount of time the calculations take doing them by hand. For example, they might give you a scenario of balancing a checkbook. So, for one question, you might have addition, multiplication and subtraction...all by hand. Not hard stuff, but if you're not used to it, it can take time. Make sure you re-familiarize yourself with metircs (like how many inches to a meter, ounce to liter/gram, Celsius to Farenheit). Fractions - just refresh on recipricol (sp?) when dividing fractions and of course common denominators in adding/subtracting fraction - oh, and converting to decimals/percentages - and comparing ratios.
Life sciences was not difficult...my score was 100% for life sciences (they break down your areas on your results). - I am 37, so that puts me at 20+ years since any life science class! lol - but that was not the kicker for me.
The other sections were very difficult for me....unfortunately, I can't even remember a sample to give you....I think I just tried to push it out of my mind when I found out I passed! lol!
I can't really recommend against getting the study workbook, because...you know, it may be of value to you for studying. I did not find that it prepared me for the science portion.
If you're concerned about math, maybe you want to get it, but if you just refreshed your knowledge on the above math tips, that would do it.
For science, I googled and got this really cool interactive mini-science thing (for kids, but still!) - it covered basic chem and science principles.
I'm not sure on how to get the resfresher for the sciences - I may start NS in the fall (I HOPE!), and I feel like I neet it for that! But, I know things will come back to me too.....or I'll go home and study it til I know it.
Do you just have to have an overall passing score - pass with 67 in all areas, or have a competitive passing grade to get into a program? All programs are so different, some Nursing programs take only high pass grades on the TEAS. The 4 I applied to only require you to pass with a 67% in all 4 areas.
Having said all this (and I am not a long poster type person!) - - -You'll be fine!
Good luck! When do you take it??
:wink2:Lisa
I have to tell somebody...
I am almost 50 and have been out of HS for 30 years and college for 26. I used the study guide and got an 87% score (National percentile 92% and program 99%)!
The science was the most challenging and I did badly on the chemistry--which I never liked--but I still passed the science section with a 73% .
I would say the book helped me mostly with the math review.
I did study over a month, and sincerely doubt I would have done as well without using the book.
My next step, getting an interview, getting accepted, and getting a grant (I hope.)
You GO GIRL!!!! You can do it!!!!
Great job on the TEAS!!! Wow!!!
I agree, the book really worked for the math...tha science was my challenge....and I took Chem a couple years ago. I was out of school for 15 years, and boy did I feel strange at first, but you get used to it.
GL to you!!!!
:)Lisa
Well, glad to say that I took the TEAS and got it over with! I'm pretty happy with my scores. 100% on reading, 91% on math, 80% on science and 85.5% on English. Composite was 89.7%. This ranked me at 96% national and 95% program. My composite is right at what was the average for the last 2 applicant pools for my school, I can't but worry that this application period might be slightly better than the last, so I think I will retake it to see if I can get a better score.
Word of advise to those who still need to take it: Get plenty of rest the night before. I made the stupid mistake of staying up till 3am studying for it and only got about 5 hrs of sleep. I was fine throught the first 3 parts of the test, but by the fourth (English) I was zapped and was too tired to double check all my answers. I'm actually surprised I got the score I did for that section. It's a long test, especially when it's on a computer and your eyes get tired looking at the screen.
Also, the ATI study guide did a pretty good job of preparing me for the test, as did the Kaplan Nursing Entrance exams study guide. Kaplan definately covered more material, especially in the science portion.

I'm taking the teas tomorrow morning. I'm pretty nervous about the math because it takes me forever to calculate things since I've been having a calculator to do everything for me for so long. The science is also worrying me because I've missed many science questions in the study guide that the review doesn't cover.
I'll be back tomorrow evening to post my experience
Good luck everyone.
