teas test at NVCC

U.S.A. Virginia

Published

Hi,

I'm new to the website and I posted this in another section but I think I was in the wrong place, hopefully this is the right area for this kind of post.

I am currently finishing my pre-requisites for the nursing program at Northern Virginia Community College, and I will be taking the teas exam in about a month. My school requires that you pass with at least a 78% in each section to apply for the nursing program. We are also only allowed to take the teas test 3 times ever with thirty days between each try, meaning if we don't get a 78% or above on all sections we will never be able to go to nursing school at NVCC. I have read about other programs around Va that use the teas as only a part of their admission process and do not require a certain score in order to apply. I am a bit worried, as I don't know exactly what to expect. I purchased the study manual but I have heard that the manual is not comparable to the actual teas test. I can only take the test once because the program that I hope to get in to starts during the summer (I will not have thirty days to re-test before applying.) If I get less than a 78% on each section I will have to apply for the program that starts in the fall. I'm just wondering if anyone could share their experience with the teas pre-entrance exam, especially the mathematics and science sections. Thanks so much.

I would love more info too! (Graduated HS in 1994 so I am rusty to say the least)

Hi TCS 26,

I have not taken the test yet, but I would suggest that you attend the study group.

Hey everyone, I need some help. I took the TEAS yesterday and passed everything but the sciences part..... I got a 76.7. I am so disappointed. I wanted to apply for the fall program. Any advice?? Is there a program in Va were my test score are good enough. I have completed all of my prereq's and coreq's for the nursing program at NVCC, and I have a 3.6... Help!!! I don't know what to do.

Since you have already taken all of the pre-reqs and co-reqs for NVCC, why don't you just wait until the next application cycle? That way you will have plenty of time to study and prepare to take the TEAS again. Next summer there is going to be both an online and in person accelerated nursing program that graduates at the same time as the people who start this fall.

I know you must be bummed out. It seems like this test is giving a lot of people problems, so you are not alone.

Sounds like a good idea, but I don't want to waste a yr doing nothing...and plus, what if I don't get accepted for the program next yr. Does anyone know anything about the Respiratory Therapy Program?

I just completed the program at NVCC. I assume(bad to do,lol) that the deadline to apply is drawing to an end, and you don't have enough time to do the rewrite?? What is it? one has to wait 30 days to do the rewrite??? Doesnt help urself, but others should take that into consideration when they keep putting off in writing the exam, give urself enough time to be able to do the rewrite in case one isn't successful. One can always go and do the rewrite and then contact the nursing dept and hope they hadn't got enough applicants, so you could sneak in that way. ya never know, with the economy in bad shape, maybe some can't afford to goto school at this time. Best of luck

Flames has made two really good points. The reason why I took the entrance exam back in August was because somewhere it said to take the test as soon as possible. And I am forever thankful for that advice (which is no longer posted anywhere in all of the brochures and information sessions). Because they changed the test and it did not affect me.

The other thing is that I personally have a suspicion that there are not going to be enough applicants this year. I know that sounds crazy and probably stupid but I have talked to literally hundreds of people and only spoke with 2 people other than myself who are applying to the program. It will be interesting to see how things play out.

Flames~Do they tell you at orientation how many people applied and how many got in? Just curious. AND, can you use a calculator on the exam given at orientation?

I'm not sure if they flat out tell you at orientation how many people got into the program--that was way back in June 2007,lol But I'm sure if you ask the 1st yr secretary or dean, they will tell you,its not a secret.

And yes, they give you a calculator to use for the exam at orientation. You will get a calculator for every exam you write,as there is always a few dosage exam questions. Which you will most likely come to love as most find them as "freebies" lol We had a "practice" drug dosage exam the 1st semester, then every semester one has a "real" drug dose exam which u have to pass, fail it, u get 1 rewrite, fail that rewrite, your out! and yes we had people fail it during the LAST semester!! The drug tests start out very simple, and do get a bit harder. they are not overly difficult, BUT you have to know what they are asking. They love to throw in a very long question, full of #'s, then at the end ask a very simple question! SO READ THE QUESTION,lol I recall a certain question, fairly long, and gave the units in cc per hr,then asked how many ml/hr it would be, well 1 cc = 1 ml, so not that difficult

The exam you have at orientation (at least for us) was just basic math,no dosage questions. They gave us a study package. DO THAT,over and over!!

I agree with flames. Practice their math study guide. Also, their recommended Med Math book is very helpful. I didn't take that ( is it NUR135?) math class. I just went through the book by myself.

I didnt take their math class either. If you dedicated, just use their recommended book to study. As well they offer free math tutors down on the 1st floor. Ensure you know hot to convert mg to g, mcg to mg, lb to kg, kg to lb,oodles of those kind of questions, lol

Hi Everyone,

After I posted here I- 1. Purchased the teas study manual from the medical campus

2. Attended the "teas study group" offered the medical campus

3. Studied the manual (which was one of the worst study guides I have ever come across)

4. Purchased and took the online practice exam (and got my first taste of the dreaded "science" section)

5. Got together with a group of future nova nurses to study

6. Took the teas and failed the science section

7. Called the others and found out that everyone else failed as well

I decided not to take the exam again before the traditional program deadline because I wanted to give myself some more time to study. Two girls that I studied with took the exam just before the deadline, and both failed. The deadline for the momentum program is coming up (June 26th) and it will be the last opportunity to get in to a program that begins this fall. As of right now I am unsure if I should take the exam before then.

I have spoken with several staff members in the nursing department, and they have all confirmed that the science section was a surprise to them as well. Apparently they thought that the science section was going to be based primarily on anatomy and physiology.

I wonder if Nova will change their admission requirements for next fall by administering a different test or lowering the science score requirement. At this point I may or may not take the exam a second time. Congrats to those of you who passed the exam!

By the way- If you are reading this and have not yet taken the teas, don't get discouraged! The reading, writing, and math was basic. The science was a challenge because it covered so many different areas. I would suggest getting the McGraw Hill and Kaplan study guides for nursing pre-entrance exams. Also, my school requires a 78% in each section in order to apply for the nursing programs, and I have heard that most schools require a much lower score. Good luck to everyone who will be taking this exam in the future.

Sorry the Science section didn't go that well. When I wrote the "exam" it was TEAS as well--then it went to HESI and now back to TEAS. I bombed the science section as well the 1st time, like many others, but lucked out on the 2nd try!! And I agree the study manual sucked. I know other schools use the TEAS as thier entrance exam, I would think it would be a very similar exam. Dont let it get ya down, you can do it.
