teas test at NVCC

U.S.A. Virginia

Published

Hi,

I'm new to the website and I posted this in another section but I think I was in the wrong place, hopefully this is the right area for this kind of post.

I am currently finishing my pre-requisites for the nursing program at Northern Virginia Community College, and I will be taking the teas exam in about a month. My school requires that you pass with at least a 78% in each section to apply for the nursing program. We are also only allowed to take the teas test 3 times ever with thirty days between each try, meaning if we don't get a 78% or above on all sections we will never be able to go to nursing school at NVCC. I have read about other programs around Va that use the teas as only a part of their admission process and do not require a certain score in order to apply. I am a bit worried, as I don't know exactly what to expect. I purchased the study manual but I have heard that the manual is not comparable to the actual teas test. I can only take the test once because the program that I hope to get in to starts during the summer (I will not have thirty days to re-test before applying.) If I get less than a 78% on each section I will have to apply for the program that starts in the fall. I'm just wondering if anyone could share their experience with the teas pre-entrance exam, especially the mathematics and science sections. Thanks so much.

I'm so happy to have found this thread! I am just going through the study guide for the TEAs now, and I have to agree that it is terrible! I am planning on attending a study session, so hopefully that will help some.

Good luck oceanwaves :) Let me know if I can help.

Flames- You mentioned an orientation exam; can you tell me more? I know that there is an orientation for students who are accepted into the program, however, I have not heard of an exam being given at that time.

In the packet where they state your accepted into the program it will include info on the 'math" exam--if they still do it---which they prob do. As well they included practice questions. DO THOSE questions, over and over and ensure you understand on how to do them. We had to score 90% on that exam. It is just basic math (not drug dosage questions) If one didn't pass that exam, you had to enroll in 1 of the math classes, think it was the drug dosage class, don't recall, as I passed, lol yes they provide a calculator. very basic, but people fail, some for very silly reasons, ensure u read the instructions, especially on how they want answers rounded off. Just do the questions provided, as those are the type of questions they ask, at least thats how it was in my case.

We had 20 (?) math questions on that first test, I think. You can make two mistakes (10%). Most mistakes were stupid. They will give plenty of time to fiinish your work. When you see other people leaving, do not rush to submit your answers. Read questions one more time. Even better, underline the key words, such as "round off to hundrets" for example. Then go back to your answers and see if you did.

Also, often you might feel confident you have the right answer, but it wouldn't be the answer they were asking. For example, you made your calculations and wrote down 5mL. However, the question was how many tsp? The answer is 1!!! Easy? Yes, but people made mistakes like that. Also, flames is right, rounding off was a big issue year after year, believe it or not.

What conversions need to be memorized for the entrance math exam? lbs to grams, Celsius to Fahrenheit, inches to cm, etc? ml to tsp...? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

mcg to mg. mg to g are seen over and over again!! lbs to kg, kg to lb. how many ml = 1 tsp. How many ml - 1 tbs? How many CC = 1 ML. 1L = how many ml?

Very basic math on the entrance exam, no drug dosage questions (at least not back in 2007) But as others have pointed out people make stupid mistakes! they want to be in a rush!! I recal on one of our drug dosage exams, this 1 gal was done the exam in like 7 minutes! iwas on question 4 (out of 20) and she was out the door! Well, guess what, she failed!! passed the rewrite!! 1 only gets 1 rewrite and ur out!! So take your time and READ the whole question again! I recall one time, where I just just redid the work I had written out! Well upon closer look, i wrote one of the numbers incorrectly! So sre the work I had done was right, but the #'s I used were wrong, lol so the answer was wrong! So read the whole question over. And understand what they are asking! they love to throw in these super long questions, ful lof information and numbers, then ask somethign very basic!! So take soem time to read the question and I understand what they want! I suck at math, but the exams they gave in my opinion were VERY fair. But I kno wof at least 1 gal (who is a super gal) who failed the drug dosage exam in the very LAST semester and she was out!! So they are not joking when they say you get 1 rewrite, fail that, your shown the door!

Just to update everyone again, I passed the Teas :)

YAY!!!!!!!!!

Are you going to apply to the accelerated program?

Well, I found out yesterday that nova extended the momentum program deadline to July 20th, so I might apply for that program. If not, I'll definitely apply for the accelerated. I know that they originally pushed the deadline from May 27th to June 26 (today), so that high school students would have enough time to graduate and apply. I wonder if they pushed the deadline again because of a lack of applicants.

Did you apply for the traditional? If so, when do you expect to hear back?

I decided not to do the Momentum program when I found out that they don't even start the NUR classes until next summer. I start the Traditional program in the Fall. I'll get my BSN after I am done having kids!

We had a "practice" drug dosage exam the 1st semester, then every semester one has a "real" drug dose exam which u have to pass, fail it, u get 1 rewrite, fail that rewrite, your out!

OK, now I need a little clarification. So are you saying you had one practice exam (that didn't count) as well as one real one, for a total of 2 during the first semester?

things may have changed, but during our first semester, we had 1 practice drug calculations exam, around Nov/December time frame! That was it! The real one was in the second semester, and then 1 every semester after that! so 1 practice, and 3 "real" ones! And there always seemed to be a few that failed the rewrite! So study away and read and reread the question, and double/triple check ur work!!!
