TCC Spring 2008 Applicants?

Published

I was wondering how many on here are applying to TCC for Spring 2008.

I will be, I printed off the application packet this morning and I've got to go thru it when I get home to see what all I need to get together and when testing dates etc...

Commuter, you should go ahead and apply to TCC. I just started the nursing program at TCC this week, and I know several people that got in with less than a 4.0. I think if you have a 3.8 and have finished ALL of your prereqs, you have as good a shot as anybody. Also, you need to do pretty good on the TEAS test, but it's not so bad. A friend of mine got in with a 3.8 science GPA and a 3.6 overall GPA. Give it a shot and see how you do. Don't listen to all of the scary stories. Good luck!
My major problem is that I am not "TSI complete" in math. My Accuplacer math placement exam scores were very low, so I must take a whopping 3 semesters of remedial math classes before I will be considered "TSI complete" in math. This 3-step remediation program includes classes in Arithmetic, Beginning Algebra, and Intermediate Algebra. Without a miracle or prayer, I am stuck in a rut for now.

Have you thought about getting a math book or some software and studying on your own or maybe getting some tutoring? The first time I took the TASP test, I didn't do great on the math part because I had not had math in years, and I had forgotten so much. Also, I sucked at Algebra, so I didn't even take it in high school.

So, I got a tutor to help me with just the math that was on the test, and I passed it. You might try that. If you study and retake the test and pass, I believe you would be TSI complete in math. If you remember what kind of math was on the test, just study that. I bought a few books called Math Smart and worked through them. There are also some great math software programs. Also, some libraries carry math videos that you can rent and watch. I know Arlington does. TCC also has math videos in their library that can be rented (You have to be a student, but I'm not sure whether you have to be enrolled in that math class or not to rent the videos.) Anyway, I hope this helps. I think you should definitely look into retesting if that is all you need. I believe you can retest every 30 days. Good luck!

100 people with a 4.0? No, I'm not buying that.

I have a friend I met while taking my pre-reqs at TCC who was denied by TCC with a 4.0. I personally was waitlisted at El Centro with a 4.0. I was told that there were 150 people with a 4.0 and they only accepted 100. So, yes, it does happen. The next semester at El Centro, the lowest accepted GPA was in the low 3s, if I remember correctly. It just depends on the semester and the other applicants.

Good luck!

Some people with a 4.0 applied for this semester and were rejected because they were missing a prerequisite or didn't do well on the TEAS test. So, it does happen. I have met several people who were really upset because they didn't get in and went around telling people, "Well, I had a 4.0, and I didn't get in." However, when you ask them if they did well on the TEAS and had finished ALL of their prereqs (not just all of their science classes), they say no or they admit to not doing well on the TEAS. There will be others who have everything, but miss deadlines. Maybe there are a few instances when people don't get in with a 4.0, but I do believe that there are often other factors as well. You are right about the schools getting more applicants in some semesters than others, though, so there may be some semesters when people really don't get in when they have a 4.0 and everything else done, but I don't think it is the norm. I still think that people should apply, though, and not base their own future plans on second hand information they hear from others.

I know how some nursing students like to tell "fishing" stories. You know, "I had a 4.0 and all of my prerequisites finished, and my TEAS scores were in the 99.999999 percentile in all areas. I had 10 years experience as a paramedic and volunteered for the Red Cross for 5 years. Plus, the folks at the interview told me that I was the most accomplished speaker they have ever heard and the most interesting and imaginative student they had interviewed, but I still didn't get into the nursing program. Maybe you will get in, though. Good luck." In my opinion, it is crazy to listen to stuff like this and then not even bother applying to a school because somebody gave you this type of spill.

Oh yes, still apply! Even though I was waitlisted, I actually did make it in off the wait list and I'm starting my second semester. It can be done! :)

I can personally verify that it is possiblt to get into TCC with a GPA of 3.2. My TEAS scores were in the 98th percentile though. When I applied for last spring, I still had 2 pre-reqs to go so I was only put on the waitlist. When I applied again for this Fall, I got in! Don't believe all that hype. Just go ahead and apply!!

I am currently in TCC doing my OB section. God willing I will be done with htis in MAy. I did notice that some one was wanting to know about courses, do not forget to take speech. I transferred in from out of state where speech is not a need but it is here.

That is so true, Mary. They are kind of particular about the Speech class also. I had two Speech classes that I had taken for my Bachelors Degree, and they would not take either of those. I had to take the one they want for their nursing program. I had assumed that they would take Public Speaking since that is what every other college or university in America wants you to take, but they wouldn't. They also wouldn't take any of my PE classes, so I had to take that as well. If you are applying to the nursing program, get any transcripts from other schools evaluated early because they may not take some of your classes from other schools. Don't assume that they will take anything. I know several people who have had to retake courses for the nursing department here. Good luck!

are you thinking of applying to the regular nursing program at tcc?? if so why???? you know they have a fast track now but they only take apps in jan/feb.. i spent 13 year trying to get tasp/thea/tsi complete in math. i finally passed algebra in the spring at tcc. did you not score high enough to start in beginning algebra. i would take intermediate algebra ( when you are eligible to) and then try to clep out of algebra. i almost passed like this but they accidentally shut off my puter while i was testing and i got mad and had to start over.

i'd like to apply to the fast-track lvn-to-rn program at tcc, but i still need to be tsi complete to do so.

i scored so low on the math accuplacer that i have to start with the arithmetic class. i attempted to take it earlier this year, but the pace was too fast for me.

I have a silly question, Does anyone have the study guide for the TEAS test?

I thought I might try here first and see if anyone had it, if not then I'll go buy it at the bookstore. Thanks!
