I am starting this for anyone who is applying for the TCC RN program in August.
seems like everyone is a little peeved at the way our summer semester turned out. it really annoys me how they said that we would be able to choose our schedules and turns out they did it for us. If they pull something like this in the fall, i am def. going to give them a piece of my mind.
good luck to everyone on your IM/SQ check off! and our next exam is less than 2 weeks away! yikes!
and did anyone else notice that our catheter check off is right after spring break, yet the skills lab wont be open that whole week. Seems a little unfair...
and good luck to the fall 2012 applicants and get ready to pull your hair out during the waiting period!
Joshsmother-
I am currently taking Micro and A&P1 at NW campus. At the end of last month, both professors mentioned a meeting with someone from admissions for nursing. Only one went into detail when explaining it to us but it was still as clear as mud. There is a points system. Here is the basis...
Your overall gpa is the first number they use, the other points are added to it. For each of the 4 core science classes, points are added based on your grade for each class, A= +.03, B= +.02, C= +.01. So if you were lucky and had A's in all 4, that would add 1.2 points. This is where it got fuzzy for me. Points are then added for each core/degree required classes up to 13 when you have a C or better. Each would add .01 for a max of 1.3 points. An additional .01 is given for any other classes "within the field" that you passed with a C or better. Here is an example, GPA= 3.5, A's in all 4 sciences (.3x4) = 1.2, 6 core/required classes completed = .6, 2 additional nursing related classes = .2. That would give you a score of 5.5. That was actually the lowest score that was accepted for Spring12. The second part they evaluate is your HESI score.
We were also told that a withdrawl is treated as an attempt for a class. If you don't drop before census, it will be counted as 1 of your two attempts. They would rather that you fail the class and retake it to pass instead of dropping it and having no initial grade to gauge your improvement. Only the first 2 attempts will be evaluated, it you take it a 3rd time it might improve your gpa but it won't be evaluated for admission to the program.
I hope that helps. I will admit I had post lecture brain fry at the time that I took my notes but I just went back and listened to my recording of the lecture and it still didn't make a whole lot of sense to me about which classes add an extra .1 to your score.
from what i have heard, they arent doing any "extra points" other schools do it, and tcc used to do it, but the last time they did it was for 2011 when they were using the teas. they used to have it where you had to have all gen.-ed done before you were even considered, but they changed that also. i know quite a few students who are still taking gen.-ed. classes.
they do have the point system for your science's and gpa, but there are more factors that come in to play when they evaluate you for admission. the better your gpa and hesi score, the more of an edge you will have. basically they put you on a spread sheet with your scores and go from there. they evaluate the likelyhood of you being able to complete the program successfully by looking at your grades, classes done, gpa, etc..(i asked the advisor when i applied) if you have all of your general education classes done, thats even better, but i don't think they put a point value on that. for other tcc programs they do, but the nursing program stopped doing that.
they may be getting it confused with other tcc allied health programs, i know surgical tech, and radiology have a point system and give extra points for certain classes and previous degrees, but not for the nursing program.
my advice is go to the nursing page on tccd.edu, and just read through the power point they have there, even on the application is explains what they use to determine who will be accepted.
excuse me if i am wrong, but i have not heard of any changes to the selection process.
and there is a waiting list, people get accepted but decline because they got in to another school, so they pick off the alternate list to fill the gap. one of my clinical mates was an alternate, and she is great.
also as may gets closer, check your campus cruiser emails daily. they did not send out the big white envelopes, they emailed us our acceptance status. i dont know if it will be the same for you guys, but since they are changing so many things it might be. and it might come early, we were told we wouldnt find out until after thanksgiving, and we found out before halloween, i still have the email in my inbox.
good luck everyone! hope to see you guys around campus!
I'm in the "waiting process" now and have been so encouraged by this thread! You've all been so informative! I noticed you mentioned something about summer schedules. That's been a question of mine...does the two-year program include both summers? Do you get a break during summer at all?
As for the points system, I think they did away with that a few semesters back. I took med terminology and pharmacology in hopes of improving my points but they don't count anymore. From what I hear, it's strictly science GPA and Hesi scores.
Good luck to everyone applying for the Fall and best of luck and hard work to those already in the program. I can only imagine how busy you all are!
Thanks Student! I was wondering. I'm trying to complete my prereqs for UTA so I can go into their BSN program upon completion of my ADN. I thought summer would be a good time to do that but talk to me after my first year (being that I get in). I'm thinking a breather before year two might be in order!
Hello to all the current students.....I will be applying the the program in August and have been following this forum for awhile. It really helps to get a lot of insight on what to expect during the admission process. I'm currently taking Chem and AP1 and will take AP2 during summer. I was just curious....did anyone get accepted or know of anyone who got accepted with all B's? I'm hoping I can pull A's in the remainder of my sciences, and I already have 1 B for Micro. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.
Maamacdonald, my instructors allow it but most ppl don't recorded. I used to in A&P but nursing is really different...Klp151, I haven't met anyone with all Bs that is currently in the program. My friend had a B when she applied and she was placed in the alternate's list. It depends on the HESI score and the other applicants as well...
I guess the thing that is boggling me is this. You can take a course 2 times and grades are good for 5 years. All they look at is the 4 science grades and the HESI. So....a person could take all 4 classes twice (if you take something twice you BETTER end up with an A) and then have a great HESI and get in. This seems nutty to me considering there is so much more to nursing than just grades. Don't get me wrong.......I get it but I know so many nurses that got B's in their sciences and got into BSN programs. Makes me think I might wanna have back up plans.
