I am starting this for anyone who is applying for the TCC RN program in August.
I saw you too TX! I was gonna shout out but thought your instructor might not like that. :)My prof told us that if you take the CID objectives and turn each one into a question you will have no problem doing well on any test! I like that info. She also posts "listening guides" instead on ppt's for the day of lecture..
And my prof said that the fundamnetals book is great with helping you for the format of the questions on the first exam as well as any exam from here on out. She warned us to expect a method completely opposite from what we know. It's not just a regurgitation of facts anymore. It's all about application, critical thinking and analysis.
LOL, we were locked out of our classroom, so we had to sit in the lobby and finish clinical. boo.... I heard that about the CID objective too. I just wish our instructor didn't rush so much. Like she would talk about the topic, then go off topic and talk about some life stories, and other things that do not even pertain to the lecture. Its quite annoying. I have her again today, so maybe it will be different.
I like the idea of turning CID objectives into questions. Our theory instructor had a few students from foundations (last semester) in class yesterday to give us some helpful hints. They recommended buying the study guide that accompanies the Kozier and Erb textbook. I haven't checked on how much they are at the bookstore yet. I guess this is the same thing.....?
Jefe- thats the one i saw at the bookstore also, im not sure if i am going to purchase it or not.. good seeing you today!!
We also received some "clarification" from my theory professor, though she did ramble on about her river rafting in Colorado for a while..., she did suggest the CID objectives thing. So i guess that is better than nothing lol.
Hi everyone!! You have all been a huge help to me as I am in the midst of taking prereqs at TCC NW campus. I have a couple of questions. I have heard some horror stories about the application process for the program and instead of taking it for face value, I decided to come ask those who have done it. I have been told that NOTHING....nothing...nothing matters except the grades on the 4 science courses and the HESI test. Nothing at all!!!! I also have been told that there is a point system but nothing in the nursing info and questions about the app process indicate this. I have been told that having to retake a science class is counted against you. I have been told that it does not matter. I am so overwhelmed right now and just wanted some clarification. I know that you are all busy as can be, me too. AP1 online was NOT a good idea and I am barely keeping my head above water and feel like I am learning the basics only. I just need some insight as to how all this works! And there are so many conflicting stories. The latest was that a person with a degree will get more points than me. This seems unfair to me! Thank you in advance for any info. Good luck to you all!!
@joshsmother
It is true that the only factors (gradewise) that count and the 4 sciences and HESI score. They compose 50/50. If TCC has a points system, it is one that has not been disclosed to us. Just hesi and sciences. Now how they rank that on a scale and determine admission from there is unknown to me. I had retakes on my sciences as well. And as far as that BS degree, I do not know. I don't think that is applied at TCC nursing. I know that for RT and other BSN programs, you get bonus points for having a previous BS.
Just stay focused on your prereqs, buy a study guide for the hesi, turn all your things in on time and what will be will be. I know it's easy for me to say that now but honestly that's all you can do.
Good luck :)
Hi there Joshsmother. You've come to the right place for answers. If you feel you need more info after everyone here replies, give the advising office at the Trinity River Campus a call.
Unless they've changed things, there definitely is not a points system. An applicant with a degree will not have any advantage over you, whatsoever. They only look at your science classes (A&P I & II, Chem., Microbio.) Also, retaking these will not hurt you, get an A the second time around and you're golden. They have only a certain amount of spots available and there's no waiting list. I think most people that got in this semester had about a 3.5 average for their science classes...I think there were some alternates that got in with a 3.25...but I'm not 100% sure. The HESI was quite easy. the computer as a calculator for your use. Study the vocabulary and grammar sections as those were the most consistently low scoring sections.
Hope this helps! Best of luck! Most followers of this board have just finished their 4th week of classes and started clinical this week. It has been amazing.
@Manow.....did okay on the test. I was a few points lower than where I wanted to be, but I'll take a passing grade!

She also posts "listening guides" instead on ppt's for the day of lecture. She said that she sees students get frantic with trying to keep up with notes on the ppt and don't listen as effectively. She posts ppt's the day after lecture. I like this approach. I'm definitely a listener and not much of a flash card, note person.
