In the past few months my facility has been taking our priviledges away, one by one. I can't think of any that remain. Moral is getting kind of low.I work nights and have no differential pay. One of the reasons I work nights is that I can study if it ever gets calm. It usually does on the weekends for a bit.
The first edict was that we couldn't have coffee, pop ect - only on break. Well, at 3am sometimes I need a little pick me up, but don't have time to get away. Don't always have time for breaks on weekdays. But, people have gotten written up for trying, and the union says there hands are tied.
Next to go was talking about anything - period. If you need to talk, you must go in the back room and whisper. That's plain stupid.
Now we aren't allowed to read anything at all on down times, especially nursing text books. Strange we can't even study something that would help us be better employees.
The list is longer still. It's like we are being ruled by Hilter.
There is not a lot you can do legally,I would look for another job. It sounds like a miserable working environment. Nursing is hard enough with out that. Is this a LTC facility?
Are they yanking privileges because they are punishing staff for not getting enough done -- like grounding you?! Or what?! How big of a unit is this? How big is this organization? I can only imagine what kind of riot would ensue if management tried to remove coffee pots from our nursing units here!!! I think talking and reading would have been more easily tolerated than caffine withdrawl!!!! Something is seriously wrong with how this scenerio is sounding!!! If management there thinks that they have to police their staff that strongly -- they have either done a very poor job at choosing their staff, a very poor job at training their staff or have some serious control issues which sound like they were potty trained WAY TOO EARLY!!! Whispering in the back room?! Give me a break! Do they have the place bugged yet?:angryfire Not even allowing you to read professional journals that would relate to improving patient care?! HMMMM! There has to be some major history to this story -- would love to hear it.
I guess your facility isn't seeking Magnet Status! If you are not allowed to talk, how do you provide care to the patient's? Someone needs to re-assess the purpose of your facility. Maybe a change in administration would be very appropriate!!
