Taking both General Biology & General Chemistry

Published

Hi, guys I am contemplating on what science classes to take to prepare me for Nursing school. I know each school has different prerequisites, some want you to have both and some want you to have one over the other. Which science course helped prepare you all for Anatomy & Physiology I & II?

Hah, I just answered this question on another thread. I'm currently in nursing school and I don't recall feeling "prepared" for Anatomy and Physiology, even after taking Introduction to Biology and Cellular Biology. Chemistry didn't help me with anything whatsoever; I only took it as part of my current school's prerequisite requirements. The best advice I can give to pre-nursing students is to start pouring over content on Khan Academy or another reputable education site. Anatomy is A LOT of memorization for the sake of memorization (unless you plan on going into orthopedics, but I'm not personally about that life) but Physiology will come up over and over and over again as you go through nursing school courses (like pathophysiology, health assessment, pharmacology, etc.). Good luck.

Like you said: different schools have different sets of pre-reqs. Research the schools you want to apply to, and take pre-reqs those schools require.

Specializes in SRNA.

Honestly, none of them prepared me for A&P I/II. A&P is a beast of its own.

A&P I quickly brushed up on Bio I topics like cell structure and their individual purpose before quickly moving on. Bio II was a complete waste because it went too much into details about plant life and evolution (yawn). Too many details about plants and evolution that I cared for.

I am starting college this fall taking pre nursing but I am a little worried because I have a learning disability and I am afraid I wont be able to make it into nursing. My high school GPA is 3.2 overall average 89 does anyone had a similar grades and they were able to handle nursing courses ?

I felt like Chemistry helped me, but I could have done well without it.

You have a good high school GPA. Most schools will make accommodations for people with disabilities, so ask about this before school starts so you know what the school can do to help you. At this point, you will have to see how you do in your nursing prerequisite classes. You will need to be able to do basic algebra for dosage calculations. You will have to do well in your science classes like biology, microbiology, anatomy, physiology, and chemistry. In addition, you will need decent writing and reading comprehension skills. As a nurse, you will also have to work quickly, receiving and giving shift notes quickly. Personally, I am fortunate to be an excellent student, but I struggled with skills in nursing school - I was one of the slowest students when it came to things like setting up IVs, etc. But I made it! You can get into nursing school with a 3.0 average, but no lower. So hang in there. Good luck!

Thank you very much that is really helpful.
