Taking my FINAL final exam on Monday

Published

You think you know, but you have no idea... The last year has changed my life.

My mother has been a Nurse for around 30 years. She is an RN, without the BSN, but she is a damn fine Nurse. I have wanted to be a Nurse since I was about 7 years old.

I recall going to a Hospital employee appreciation party one day, which it seems do not occur anymore, and as I was walking down the hall a patient called out "Who is that cute little girl, Mary, is that your daughter?" Now, this was back before HIPAA, and my mom brought me in introduced me to the nice man, and we started talking. He was tetraplegic, I wanna say around 50, but had no family visiting. I, in typical 7 year old fashion, began rattling off questions to this nice man, who I recall enjoyed answering them. As we were chatting the Nurse came in and provided her care, he looked at me and said "These ladies are lifesavers, without them I would be miserable."

I wanted to be "that lady", I wanted to be a Nurse.

I recall her bridging from LPN to RN when I was 12. The huge textbooks, the crazy sounding practice test questions, it was all so fascinating to me. My mom would let me read her texts and pick out "key points" to ask her questions about. I grew up with asthma, so the chapter on asthma was really interesting to me. At 12 years old I was far from understanding much of what I was reading, but smart enough to pick up tiny bits of info here and there. The types of stuff 12 year olds can, like we have arteries, veins, etc.. They can become "sick", etc.

I started my LPN Nursing program August 18, 2010. A low cost CC program with a great reputation. That is the day my life changed forever. Nursing school changes you. It changes the way you see people, the way you process the world around you, the way you think. The VOLUME of reading I have done is simply incredible. The material is not difficult to understand, but when you have 500 pages of it, it becomes difficult to maintain focus.

I take my final exam on the 25th, pinning is on August 2nd. I am going to bridge for my RN next year, I am going to check out excellsior.

I had NO idea what I was getting myself into. I thought I did, but I had no idea how this experience would change MY life, how much it could change ME. I am going to take NCLEX soon.... I am going to be a NURSE soon.... It is what I have always wanted.

For those of you about to start this journey, be it LPN/ADN/BSN, it will change you, but for the better. You will realize not only the impact you can have on others, but they amazing impact they can have on you.

Thanks for your story! :yeah::yeah::yeah:You are lucky to have such a wonderful role model to look up to and she is blessed to have you as well! You are truly inspiring and I wish you lots of luck! (Although I doubt you need it!)
