Switch from FNP to AGPCNP???

Published

Specializes in Nursing.

I am considering a switch from my FNP program to Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner.

Is this the stupidest idea ever?

I want to get out of school as FAST as possible ... and I have NO INTENTION of ever working with kids or women's health.

What are your thoughts?

Would this mean I would be INTERNAL MEDICINE only??? Would I ever be able to do a specialty such as dermatology or cardiology?

Thanks for any input!!!

Either with FNP or adult-gero you could always find a job that specializes in adult pts only in either specialty.

There are plenty of jobs for Adult NPs. Most patients are adults. Most specialties only deal with adults. An FNP will provide the most opportunities, as many clinics want someone who can see all ages, but if you really don't want to deal with kids, then go for the Adult NP. I've never had trouble getting a job.

anne_marie_oregon I'm on the brink of switching too (from FNP to AGPC), wasn't keen on peds, the additional hours...my current professors (both adult NPs) said majority of patients are >13, most internal med sub-specialties are adult patients. Plus depends on the employer/HR and utilization & hiring the AGPC or FNP within their clinics.

I'm still struggling on the switch, need to make decision within a week to make the official change of study (paperwork etc.)

This is not the stupidest idea ever. If you have no intention of ever working in pediatrics or women's health, then why waste your time on learning about children and women?

This does not mean internal medicine only. This may mean not being able to work urgent care or things like that, but you could definitely do dermatology and cardiology.
