Hi There!
Looking to get some insight from High school School Nurses and any nurses with drug abuse assessment experience. With the recent news of students bringing drugs to school (Google Naperville North high school), I was wondering how you all are assessing students for possible drug use. The news reports that the students consumed candies laced with drugs. Other than assessing their vital signs, what else do you assess on a student who is suspected to be under the influence?
Thank in advance
i've heard some motion about narcan being required in schools here. I think it will only be required in high schools if they decide to pull the pin on it. I am hoping so - it would be a big waste here with my population - all the cops around here carry it and have a fast response time if i were to need it.
Same talk around here. I have mentioned to a couple of my admins and eyes widen. I can get the fire department here (they carry it) with it in about 3-5 minutes if I suspect it is needed.
I have MS students that fall asleep in class - no assessment has revealed drug use suspicions, but has revealed how late students stay up on social media or playing video games.
But marijuana...well, my state just made it legal for 21+ and I have many, many students that use it off site. Their clothes reek of it. But I've only had one circumstance where I suspected a student may be under the influence of it at school. I did my assessment, passed it along to my dean of students and they handled the discipline part of it since there was no immediate medical response needed.
