I agree

No, I think more should be done to train nurses here in America.

I still think there needs to be some sort of money allocated toward training programs in healthcare facilities (if that is their issues for not hiring "new grads") I don't know how many "new grads" are sick of hearing that facilities only want nurses w/ "1 year of experience."
:yeah:

Could not have said it better myself! How am I supposed to get 1 year of experience as an RN if no one will hire new grads? So frustrating....

Specializes in Acute Care.

As I'm sure many others have said, there is no "nursing shortage." There is a shortage of nurses willing to work under the horrible conditions most facilities impose on their bedside staff due to a wide variety of reasons, most of them involving money.

voted no, there is no national nursing shortage. there is a shortage of jobs for americans though.

Specializes in Critical Care, Patient Safety.

We need to be investing more in the long-term by employing new grads. One big problem is the bottleneck created by the healthcare industry that is now limiting the hiring of new grads.

A bunch of the nurses i worked with at a 200 bed hospital, and myself, were laid off because it was cheaper to recruit nurses from England. Though they did not say that was why we were let go; higher ups found very sneaky ways to sabotage the seasoned nurses and used snoops, henchmen, and slave catchers to assist them.

In fact, when the DON from the tele floor and the CNO made a trip together to England we knew we would be axed. I hope this is enough to answer the question.

I, also, do not feel the united states has a nursing shortage. If hospitals and other health care facilities would up the pay, benefits and staffing, there would be nurses coming out of everywhere. No I do not believe they should recruit from other countries. Lets do something original: TAKE CARE OF THE NURSES WE HAVE HERE!!!!!

give that nurse a cigar!!!!

I say WHAT nursing shortage?! Right now everyone is in a hiring freeze. Those who are hiring tend to want years of experience. If you're a new grad, forget it. Even the internship jobs are scarce and people are fighting over them like you wouldn't believe!

Why would we be wanting to export one of the few good paying jobs we have left? Will the US not be content until the only jobs left for most Americans are pizza delivery or walmart cashier?

An employee who worked at one of the major hospital chains in my state told her husband about the regular recruiting trips to the Philippines. No, no recruiting trips to local high schools or colleges to recruit American would-be nurses. Trips to the Philippines. I could imagine how that looked spelled out in the annual budget. Must have been listed under "cost containment" strategies and "vacation time for desk burn out prevention".

There is no nursing shortage. There are THOUSANDS of U.S. new grads and experienced nurses that need jobs!!! THEY should have priority. Sorry - this is a sensitive topic for me and REALLY angers me!:madface::madface:
