Survey on infant male circumcision

  1. Do you agree with AAP's policy statement on male circumcision?

    • Yes, but the decision to circumcise should be left up to the parents.
    • No, I don't believe infants should be routinely circumcised
    • Yes. I believe in male circumcision as public health measure, but only when a male can consent for circumcision himself.

Undecided. I don't think there is enough scientific literature to make a decision at this point.

The current policy statement from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).

"Evaluation of current evidence indicates that the health benefits of newborn male circumcision outweigh the risks and that the procedure's benefits justify access to this procedure for families who choose it." http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/130/3/585

Cant figure out how to vote lol.

The decision should be left up to the one who owns the member when he can weigh the pros and cons for himself.

The foreskin is neither infections, nor pathologic.

From what I have heard, it is WAY more painful to have it done older. I have a friend who had to have her son done at age 6 because of issues and it was HORRID. My boys were both done as infants. I think it IS the parent's choice, but it helps to have some medical research to help with informed decision making.

I had both my boys done as infants, mostly for two reasons. One was to look like their father so that there would not be a lot of questions and the other for cleanliness. Who do you think was going to clean that area??? At that time(late 80's) research was being done to see if uncircumcised males had a higher STD transmission. I had seen a circumcision done on an infant as a student nurse, it was gut wrenching, but having seen that and wanting the best for my boys, my husband and I decided they should be circumcised also. Neither boy has ever approached us about being circumcised. Plus at that time, insurance paid for it and it was done before they left the hospital.

I don't know that it's more painful, only that when the child is older, they can actually VERBALIZE the pain.

Male circumcision much more invasive and time consuming the older the male gets. Whether the amount of time of surgery, the amount of cautery needed, and the suturing needed for older male circumcision versus infant circumcision makes it more painful it is impossible to be 100% for sure, but physiologically and based on other studies on surgical time and pain it would seem to indicate that there would be more pain in non-infant circumcision.

People who have healthy, functional, undiseased tissue sliced off of non consenting infants or children of either gender to serve their own preferences are barbarians.

Uh huh...That is your opinion. You seem to full of opinions on this subject, but no actual facts.

You posted a poll. That is a request for opinions.

RK has a point.

If the benefits supposedly outweigh the risks then WHY are we one of the few developed countries who still perform this elective surgery. And their STD rates are either similar or lower than THE US. It cannot possibly be that hard to teach your child how to properly clean their privates and practice safe sex. I have two girls and if I ever have a boy I will not be performing a circumcision on him. To look like their dad is the most superficial and irresponsible reason to perform a circ, as if that couldn't be so easily explained. To them is akin to asking why I'm a different skin color than my mom or dad. To kids it's really simple, I don't know why we as adults and parents seem so attached to projecting our own insecurities and fears unto our children.
