surprised at how non active this board is

I live in Michigan and I am a student nurse, all of my family live in Kentucky except my immediate family. I have family there in Ky. that are nurses, just wondered why this board is kind of lame? the Ohio and Michigan boards are very active...

Wow I'm so glad somebody else noticed! Im a student in Louisville and I've been tryin to get some info on local hospitals that's not coming from a nurse recruiter! I haven't found one KY nurse yet! This is amazing!

I'm glad some others have noticed also! You can post here and never get a response and I know there are a LOT of nurses in Kentucky!

This is sad, I would love more communication on the KY site, especially since I have now "officially" been accepted into the LPN program for Fall 07.

Maybe it's just us 3 ladies??????

No I agree with you guys. yes, there are both lots of nurses in KY, and lots of nurses that use the Internet! So why aren't they posting on here???

What are the best hospitals for new nurses in regards to orientation and preceptorships? And what are the local hospitals offering GNs in pay and benefits?

I would say U of L hospital, or Norton Hospital downtown are the best for new nurse orientation. I worked at U of L for about 9 years before going to Norton- better nurse-to-patient ratios at Norton. You'll find the starting pay in Louisville hospitals @ around $19-$20/hr for new grads. Norton has better shift diff and flex time than U of L, but U of L's insurance is way cheaper.

I've worked agency in other area hospitals, and the only other hospital I would recommend would be Norton Audubon (especially if you like hearts). If you want trauma, go to U of L.

If you want an awesome experience that'll enable you to work anywhere, you can't beat U of L. It was an invaluable experience for me, and I use what I learned there every day.

Hey Rntoben2008! Small world. All my immediate family lives in KY. I was thinking of possibly moving when I complete my program. I miss my family terribly and my kids LOVE spending time in KY.

Does anyone know much about the London/Corbin area? From what I understand there is only Baptist Regional and Marymount hospitals. I would imagine that they probably have no problems staffing since it is such a small area.

I am thinking about applying to Norton Audubon and Baptist East. To the nurse who has worked agency, what did you think of Baptist East? Are the nurse-patient ratios at these 2 hospitals ok? I am used to 5 med-surg patients.

Thank you so much BBF!! That's very helpful. I'm also glad to hear something positive about Uof L hospital. All I ever hear about it is how crowded it is. I'm definately concerned about pays ( I do have bills to pay!), but starting my nursing career with a solid foundation is my major concern. I'd love to get some ICU/CIVU experience. Maybe even peds. I really really appreciate the input.

I started at BHE, in TCU ... YEARS ago.. this was back before we had Vencor/Kindred, so we had vents on TCU on a regular basis. I left for a while, went to Caritas, then came back to BHE, working CCU, then OHRR.

I loved BHE, and would have probably be working there, had I not found a job in a facility closer to home. I can't speak for the ratios, unfortunately.

Where did you do clinicals??

I haven't worked at B. East, but have been a patient/visitor there. They seem to be a very quality hospital, and everybody there said they liked working there (except on the stepdown unit). The ratios are OK at Audubon- the reason the ratios are better at Norton downtown, is that they have these 10 bed pods, which= 5 med/surg patients or 3 TCU pt's each on these units.
