Supplies/Tips for LPN School

Published

I'm actually starting LPN school next week! I'm super excited and more nervous than I ever thought I could be. Does anyone have any tips to help things go smoothly? What supplies besides books should I be looking for? I guess I have the obvious, backpack, paper, pens/pencils. Anything else that would be helpful?

I highly reccomend a nanda nrsg dx book. I've never done a care plan without it!! And the times I've tried I'm totally lost! Super helpful!

Another study tip I've used all throught school is taking notes and highlighting in my books during lecture and at home. I've never even printed out the power points! Then all of your notes are in one location and u do not have to flip through tons of papers to study!! The other option is if your teachers allow computers in class I pull up the power point and take notes directly on each slide

Here's what has helped me:

index cards to make flashcards - I use them for everything from A&P to Pharmacology to Labs. I use an app on my phone called flashcardlet and it's nice because I always have the cards with me, and I don't have to spend so much money on cards.

Binders - Hopefully your instructors give you the powerpoints. If so, you'll want to keep them in a binder for each class. Trust me, you'll need at least a 2" binder for each class.

A wall calendar - It works better for me than a day planner, and then my husband can look at it too so he knows what to expect and how he can plan around my schedule. I write the hours I will be in classes in black, and then write in tests and paper due dates in red. It is SO helpful!

highlighters - I highlight everything. I go through my syllabuses and highlight tests and homework, highlight things in powerpoints while in class that I think might be on a test or is something I feel is important, etc.

colored pens - It makes reading your own notes much more interesting when you use different colored pens. I don't know why, but it just helps.

flashdrive - Put all of your papers that you have to write on a flash drive and bring it with you to EVERY class. You would be surprised how many people forget their homework at home sitting on the table. If you have an extra copy on your flash drive, you can just print another one off at school and not have to turn it in late.

Rolling backpack or briefcase - At first, my classmates made fun of my rolling briefcase, but after we got all our dictionary sized books, they stopped laughing and started joining in. ;)

Caffeine - or whatever you use to give you energy to study

support system - your family HAS to be understanding because you might have to miss out on some family functions when you are studying for big tests or finals.

sense of humor - nursing school is an emotional roller coaster. You need to be able to let things roll off of you and not take things personally. :)

HAVE FUN!

I agree with previous posters that nclex review books are an awesome resource in helping to understand nursing test questions. I think one of the hardest parts of nursing school is adjusting to the different way of thinking. It's no longer just knowing facts, but applying them based on what you know. Good luck! And let me throw in there that cheap pens are the best pens. I got caught up on buying nice gel pens and there's no telling how much I spent. I also used file folders to store previous materials and labeled them with contents and my grade on the exam over the material so it would be easier when finals came around to know what areas I had the most trouble in.

Get the digital books if you are tech savvy. I love strolling into class with just my kindle or being able to read textbooks on my iPhone no matter where I am. Plus making study reviews is a snap when you can integrate text or make diagrams using the text material. I second the travel tea brewer, there's a tight group of tea drinkers in my class and we were even allowed a kettle in the back of the class. The twistable coloring pencils are awesome! I started with flash cards but found them tedious and useless so I went with an online flash card maker that allows me to load them on any device as well as print them out in sheets. Good luck!

Post-it tabs to mark pages, especially homework pages if you are doing it out of a workbook. By the end of my nursing program, I could not function without them. Seriously, they are the greatest thing in the world.
