Super stressed about my future career as a Nurse

Published

I'm super stressed about my future career as a Nurse.

Most of you nursing students may know that the main science classes include Anatomy, Microbiology, and Physiology. Well the grade policy at the college I attend, is that you need a certain overall gpa of 2.5 between those 3 classes. Meaning you'd need at least A's and B's, or maybe 2 C's and an A. Another thing is you can only repeat one of those classes once.

Well I've done Microbiology, took it twice. Got a D the first time, a C the second. Now I'm in Anatomy, half way through, I don't think I'll make it with a C. Okay :crying2:... now, I absolutely don't know what to do to achieve my dreams of being a Nurse, most importantly.. as soon as possible. I suppose it's my fault for not doing what I'm suppose to do, but how do I get around this and be able to achieve my goals? All suggestions, comments, advice is highly appreciated. I really need guidance. I got no one else to go to for this kind of advice so I'm asking all of you Nursing people worldwide lol... :)

Thank you all so much for the advice. I highly appreciate it.

Unfortunately, I've tried replying to a couple of posts but was not able to submit them. I don't know if it's the site or my computer but whenever I try to reply with a long respond, it never goes through. I'll see what I can do.

All of your responses has helped me broaden my perspective on the situation I'm in right now. You've helped me realize my options and motivated me once again to pursue my dream of being a Nurse.

Thank you, hopefully I'll be able to respond so I could get more relative opinions.

Let me start and say don't give up on your dreams. You can make it happen.

However... I'll need to know some more details. WHY do you think you are getting these grades? Is it the test? The material? The way the class is taught? How are you studying for it?

Science classes are difficult, but they are certainly do-able. Personally I didn't think it was too bad, just lots of studying and persistance. All the information I learned APPLIES to nursing school and thats the most important part. That is why those classes are prereqs to nursing school.

I'd say it's my anxiety when I study. The material is also extensive. Especially in anatomy, a lot of info for my brain to retain in short periods. Teacher's good. I try using flash cards to study and visual aids from text book. I agree with a lot of studying and persistence but I'm afraid I haven't dedicated myself enough to stick to those words. Sometimes I struggle concentrating.

I think you need to decide just how serious you are about passing these classes and adjust your behavior accordingly. There is no magic pill here that will act as an elixir to your GPA deficiency. As you have already stated, it is you that must take charge of this problem whether it be in study time or method. Only you can correct these areas. Perhaps a discussion with an instructor that you like might offer tips and suggestions on improving your grades.

True. I'd really like to be known as a Nurse and be able to get through this because there have been people who have doubted me. At this point, I'm thinking, although I'd like to be just like my mom, a nurse, at the same time I feel as if it's not my passion. On the other hand, I like to remind myself that there are very hard working people out there who do jobs they never intended to do.. so, why can't I do this. You know? I do need to adjust my behavior and learn some more discipline.

I have to agree on one thing- A and P is tough! I'm not saying that Micro. is a cakewalk, IT'S NOT. But, compared to A and P, micro. is almost icing. I have to review everything myself. Well, just to let you know that you're not the only one who feel this way. There's plenty of us.

Hey AD1ZONC,

I have the same problem as you. Also, I kinda feel I know you somehow? I don't know how I would?

Cheer up --- summer is near :)

I would highly recommend that you find a tutor - a competent one, that is (many are not) - and work with them regularly, starting BEFORE you get in trouble. Once you're a few weeks behind, it's very tough for a tutor to help you get caught up.

If she's not studying regularly on her own no amount of tutoring is going to help. She is going to have to change her own study habits if she wants to change her grade. SHe has already admitted not studying like she should, that would account for the poor grades.

Have you visited your career development center on campus to learn where your strengths lie? Is there a field that you are passionate about? It sounds to me like you're talking yourself into nursing because your mom does it. I have a friend who became a police officer because her husband said she could never make it through police academy. She lasted a year before quitting to pursue something that didn't make her sad every day.

You might be more motivated to do the work if you move toward a degree that excites you.

If she's not studying regularly...
As I said, the time to get plugged in with a good tutor is right up front. The regular sessions with any decent tutor will include help setting up a plan and schedule for regular and effective studying as well as providing accountability.

If it takes a third party to hold you accountable and get you motivated to study, then there is a problem. She's not a kid, she is a an adult. It could be that she may not be as interested in this as she thought. I was previously enrolled in Business before I chose nursing and it was a chore to get myself to study. I had no real desire to, I'd start and get distracted. Why? Because my heart wasn't really in it, and I had no real passion for what I was trying to be. If you have a passion for something, no one is going to have to hold your hand to get you to sit down and study your work. Who will keep her motivated to keep going to the tutoring sessions once they actually begin?

If she were actually studying the material and still having difficulty understanding, then I would suggest a tutor, I dont think tutors should be used to get someone to actually do their homework.

Some people just love to argue.

With three degrees behind me (which have included spectacular failures as well as phenomenal successes) and extensive experience as a tutor from junior high all the way through college, and yes, even pre-nursing students, I'll stand behind what I've written.

By all means, though, feel free to continue to argue... I'm sure the OP's finding your comments very helpful.

Since when did having a intelligent discussion become arguing? I thought that was the whole point of a DISCUSSION board, LOL. And at what point did stating the amount of degrees earned equate to a rebuttal? But okay. :D

Your opinion is based off your own experiences and you stick by that. Mine is based off my own and I stand by that. We will have to agree to disagree. ;)

And at what point did stating the amount of degrees earned equate to a rebuttal?
I'm not rebutting anything... rebuttals are for arguments and I'm not arguing with you. I'm simply offering my advice to the OP. My degrees are irrelevant in and of themselves; the many years of experience garnered through their attainment, however, are not. It's from my experience as a student, both failing and succeeding, as well as as a tutor for pre-nursing students, that my advice to the OP derives.

Why you're choosing to argue with me, I don't know. I'll leave it to the OP to decide if there's any merit to my suggestion and to decide for himself/herself how best to proceed.
