SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University ABSN 2024

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hi everyone,

I haven't seen any thread for the SUNY Downstate ABSN program for the Fall 2024 start so I thought so here's one for anyone applying/attending/etc!

Hello everyone! I recently got my acceptance ?  I was called and emailed for an interview around a week and a half after my application was submitted and the day after the interview I got an email about the acceptance.

Good luck to those still applying/waiting and hopefully you hear soon!

It's for ALL applicants, not just for international students.

I applied early fall 2023 (October with free waiver) but was told during an in person open house they will not look at applications without the TEAS scores. I took the TEAS late because I did not have the ID and needed to wait to get it. I failed the Reading  and passed everything else. They told me to retake exam and pass with minimum score of 80 in reading and math. I am retaking exam and submitting scores 2 days before the deadline.

Hello! Thank you very much!

I was wondering what the typical schedule is like at this school, and how has the clinical experience been for you?

Hi! We usually have online classes on Tuesday. The first semester we had 3 classes on Tuesday and 1 Thursday night. It is doable. The first semester Pharm and Patho are the main focuses. Pharm we had a quiz every week but I found it helpful as the constant studying help me memorize my meds. We had sim labs the first few weeks of the semester and then placed in nursing homes for our first clinicals. Instructors are nice and usually always willing to help/ move things around according to student.

Has anyone heard back yet? I wonder how long they review applications for. My status is on "faculty screener assigned."

Hey! I just submitted my application- I had to retake the TEAS literally this morning. Super nervous to hear back, but also excited! For interviews, are they strictly in-person? I attend college upstate and could probably figure out a way to make it to the city for an interview, but I'd really prefer not to loll. Good luck everyone!!

I got my scores last night, a little after 8pm. I'm nervous as well. I need to hear something and I pray it is a yes. I heard others say their interview was virtual. Hoping for the best.

After my status turned to faculty screener assigned, I heard back approximately a week later for an interview.

The interviews are over zoom and approximately 30 minutes long.

Oh, I see! Has anyone else with their status as "faculty screener assigned" heard back?

Hello everyone. Good luck on your application journey! I am currently a student with Downstate and would love to help you guys out with any questions. I will do my best to answer! For the applicants that are accepted, I recommend making a facebook page( the only group that all nurses allow) to connect with one another.

Hi! Thanks for offering to answer questions.
I was recently admitted after submitting my application at the end of November!

I am wondering if you/others work part-time during the program. If yes, how much work do you think is reasonable? And are there days when you don't have any clinicals/classes or can you be expected to be available any day/night of the week?

And then I was also curious how people have been reacting to the news about SUNY Downstate hospital closing. Do you feel like it will impact the program at all? Thanks so much!!

Hi there are even some who work full time in the program. I would say if u are worried about GPA, applying for NP schools etc it would be better to focus on the program without work. Personally I worked only 1-2 days and some weeks I didn't work at all. I was lucky enough that my current job allow me to be flexible in my schedule. I would say in the first 2 weeks it is a little crazy to get everything down because there's a lot of assignments and every professor has their own unique requirements.  We only had classes on Tuesdays and 1 Thursday night. I think the program tries it best to accommodate working ppl/ ppl with families. They have let us know that the hospital closing won't affect the school. They are trying to make it more of an outpatient clinic + adding new school facilities. But it may not even happen, we haven't heard too much news about it.
