SUNY Downstate ABSN 2023-2024

Updated:   Published

I've started this thread so those who are applying or applied for the SUNY Downstate ABSN 2023 can talk about the process, acceptance, information etc. I haven't seen anyone talking about this cycle of applications which is making me super nervous so hopefully some of you are out there and want to discuss what's going on.

Goodluck to everyone applying!

Just got my acceptance today!! Did anyone else get accepted?

Congrats! I got accepted too!!

Hi everyone!

All my letters of recommendation was sent in this week. My status got updated to "forwarded to program for review". Now I'm waiting to see if there will be an interview invite. It seems they are working pretty fast this year. Also if anyone has information on the shuttle it would be appreciated. I live in flushing Queens and debating if I will have to get a car and drive there or take the 1 and a 1/2 hour commute ?. My stats are decent not the best but I have a lot of patient experience and good LORs so I hope I have a chance. Good luck to everyone!

I think they're working fast too. Was honestly shocked when they started calling for interviews beginning of December. So with the shuttle from what I've seen there's a parking lot shuttle, hospital shuttle, and transportation shuttle that takes you to I believe the bus/train stations around the area. Honestly I will be doing the 1+ hour commute bc I was doing the same commute to my college in Manhattan. There's an upside tho, they said that they do all lectures on the same day and lectures will be online. Students would just have to go in for lab/ clinicals.

I got an email for an interview next week. Not sure why I got an email invite instead of a phone call. Nonetheless I am very excited but I haven't received a zoom link yet-just an invite. I'm very happy I got this interview because other schools seems to be taking longer and I haven't heard back from them yet. Downstate is definitely a top choice because of the cost. I think I will most likely be commuting to school as well. If I get in I will post my stats because I know I'm always looking at stats as well.

Wow I didn't even know the lectures are online. Thank you that definitely is an upside. Do you have any other insights on the program? Where would clinical mostly be? The Brooklyn hospital? Also do u mind posting your stats? I'm curious?

I can't remember but I think they send the zoom link the day before the interview so don't worry, you'll probably get it around then. You'll learn a lot during the second half of the interview so definitely ask questions for some insight. From what I was told they have their own hospital in Brooklyn (shuttle takes you) and ofc a handful of other sites in Brooklyn and then very few in the other boroughs. Clinicals is first come first serve for placement so it's all up to you and if you choose "first"

My stats were 3.0 undergrad and 4.0 in prereqs (all A's) but I did retake some prereqs. They took into consideration my improvement, I also worked at a hospital and had two strong LOR. My TEAS score was not that great (80% overall/ 85% reading/ 88% math/ 78% science)

Hi guys!

I got an email saying my app was forwarded for "program review" like a week ago but didn't get anything regarding an interview yet. I have a not so great cumulative GPA but all A's in my prereqs and a great TEAS w/ strong LOR's. I also currently work at a hospital. I still have to take microbio in the Spring (which starts next week) so I'm not sure how that weighs in to getting an interview. They did say it's fine to have a class or two left when applying so IDK. I actually live walking distance from Downstate though I didn't know the lectures were 100% online. Sending luck and good vibes to everyone! ?

Would anyone who is committing to Downstate be interested in getting an apartment in a neighborhood in BK together? I'm 22 (F)

Hey did anyone that got accepted complete their health forms yet and got an update on what to do next?

Hi everyone! Got accepted today, so excited. I'll post my stats bc ik ppl are curious

my undergrad GPA is a 3.6

science GPA I think its around 3.2-3.5? I'm not too sure on this. I got mostly Bs in a lot of my science due to balancing work and stuff- wish I focused more on school

my TEAS I got a 90+ in reading and math but my science was lacking below a 70. I was nervous about my grades but I do have 2 years of medical experience along with pharmacy and customer service experience. I also think my essay and LORs were pretty strong. For the interview just be yourself- they ask us not to share interview questions so I will respect that; but you can find "nursing school interview questions" to help yourself prepare. They really do look at your application holistically which I appreciate, nursing is my passion and my biggest career commitment- as long as you are able to show this to admissions staff they will consider you! Show them your personality and what makes you a good candidate for nursing.

Maybe we can make a fb group/ discord for students as well? I know some other cohorts do this and I would be down to join  ?
