Suny downstate absn 2018-2019

Published

Hello Everyone.

I was just wondering if anyone out there applied for the 2018-2019 program at downstate? Hoping we can all loop each other in on the status.

Does anyone know when the first day of classes begin? I know Orientation is Tuesday, May 29 right after Memorial Day weekend.

That is also the first day of classes.

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone who has been accepted or waitlisted can provide their work/volunteer experience and hours?

My application has been under review for more than 2 months and haven't heard anything back yet. I'm getting kind of antsy because I didn't have any type of nursing or medical experience when I applied but have started volunteering at a hospital and have only about 12-15 hours so far. Not sure if the lack of experience is gonna be my downfall..

Thanks for any input!

I will be attending in May and by next month I will have a year and a half of CNA hospital experience. I think in the application instructions it strongly suggested to have clinical experience. It helped in the interview because I had a lot to talk about as it related to my job.

Hi,

I will be attending in May as well. I've volunteered as an EMT for a little over a year now. I don't have that many hours though. I think they look for experience in the sense that you've been doing something related to the health field not just the hours at self.

Thank you for those who replied to my post, you were all helpful! I definitely shot myself in the foot for not getting enough experience and will probably reapply for 2019 :(

Hi all.

Still on the alternate/wait list.

Anybody in this list hear anything ?

I am so anxious!

Have you guys created a Facebook group yet? I'm currently finishing up at Downstate with the class of '17-'18; it was really our lifeline. We were able to share everything with one another from updates from teachers to extra-curricular and help with studying. It will certainly be beneficial to have some of us on your group as well to provide our 2 cents when it can be helpful. They're really overhauling the program for your year, so many changes will be in place, but there are definitively fundamental things that we can guide you with. Let me know if you guys have a fb group, I'd love to help out!

Were Your classes lectures, online or a mix? How Many days were clinical?

Bear in mind that they are overhauling almost every facet of this program, so all these answers are true for this year do not Bank on them to make work commitments etc.

Our setup was mini semesters throughout the entire program. That means in the 12 weeks of Summer there were two 6-week semesters period in the 16 weeks of fall there were two 8-week semesters, spring as well period for our summer they're starting to go into the cycle that they're beginning with you guys which seems to be longer semesters. We're having three to four classes run concurrently for 12 weeks.

Clinical is always either one or two days. If it's one day it's a full 12 hour day, and if it's two days it'll be an 8 hour day plus a 4-Hour day( with the exception of our summer OB clinical, which was two 8 hour days).

Every "real" class is in class lecture, some teachers care more, some care less about attendance. One Professor even went so far as to tell us on the first day that if we didn't feel like we were benefiting from her class we should just show up for the tests. The other classes which are more the elective or community style are hybrid. Assuming they keep the summer the same it was full time almost every day of the week in school, fall and spring were much manageable for those with part-time jobs as we only have to really be in class one day a week, or two half days, and then the other day is your clinical.
