  1. Good luck! My year, 2017-2018 had appx 20/70 males. That is certainly well above the national average of 12% graduating male nurses annually. Give them a reason to see you shine. Good luck!
  2. Hey. I found many errors especially in the math section of the official teas practice book. To be perfectly honest, whether "Nic" stands for nicole or Nicolas will make a difference here. It seems like many nursing programs lower their threshold to try to get more male students in. Nothing overt, just a subtle nuance that if you're paying attention becomes apparent. Teas is a bit of a joke. It's geared, in my opinion towards students finishing an associates, or fresh out of college. You should easily be able to pull 80s or even 90s
  3. Bear in mind that they are overhauling almost every facet of this program, so all these answers are true for this year do not Bank on them to make work commitments etc. Our setup was mini semesters throughout the entire program. That means in the 12 weeks of Summer there were two 6-week semesters period in the 16 weeks of fall there were two 8-week semesters, spring as well period for our summer they're starting to go into the cycle that they're beginning with you guys which seems to be longer semesters. We're having three to four classes run concurrently for 12 weeks. Clinical is always either one or two days. If it's one day it's a full 12 hour day, and if it's two days it'll be an 8 hour day plus a 4-Hour day( with the exception of our summer OB clinical, which was two 8 hour days). Every "real" class is in class lecture, some teachers care more, some care less about attendance. One Professor even went so far as to tell us on the first day that if we didn't feel like we were benefiting from her class we should just show up for the tests. The other classes which are more the elective or community style are hybrid. Assuming they keep the summer the same it was full time almost every day of the week in school, fall and spring were much manageable for those with part-time jobs as we only have to really be in class one day a week, or two half days, and then the other day is your clinical.
  4. Have you guys created a Facebook group yet? I'm currently finishing up at Downstate with the class of '17-'18; it was really our lifeline. We were able to share everything with one another from updates from teachers to extra-curricular and help with studying. It will certainly be beneficial to have some of us on your group as well to provide our 2 cents when it can be helpful. They're really overhauling the program for your year, so many changes will be in place, but there are definitively fundamental things that we can guide you with. Let me know if you guys have a fb group, I'd love to help out!
  5. Applied end of Nov, got decision mid-december. The earliest responses were in Dec so don't stress. Honestly it depends on the type of learner you are. This program is not going to hold your hand. Some teachers are more empathetic, some less. After summer semester you can definitely hold down a full or part time job, as all you really have to physically be on site for is a 1 half day of class, and one full day of clinicals weekly (once in a while anther half day Friday)
  6. As far as pre-reqs go, I was accepted in Dec of last year with all of my sciences completed, and only stats, dev psych and anthropology to be competed
  7. they overhauled the test last August. Now u may use a calc on the math part, as well as some other changes. I believe it's called the Teas 6 now. beware there are mistakes to be found in the book.
  8. Summer is pretty intensive. Without having a real confirmation that the school would accept it, I took the plunge and took patho the last semester before the nursing program started. Thankfully they accepted my class; I and a handful of others saved ourselves from needing to to take path while taking pharm and other classes. They pack it in the first summer. In a short 12 week summer semester (part A and B), we had the following classes that one must take: health assessment-3cr health promotion-4cr path-3cr pharm-3cr OB/Gyn-4cr prof nursing dev.-2cr principles of teaching and learning-2cr So thats a total of 21 credits in a really short amount of time. very doable, But I highly recommend taking any classes before that they will accept. It really eases up from fall moving forward with 12 clinical hr weekly shift being either a 2 day shift(i.e. 8 hrs thurs, 4hrs fri) or a 12 hour shift, and only 1 class day with 5hrs. the other 2 (2cr) classes this semester are online. It's extremely doable; getting in is the hard part, so do as well as u can on TEAS and pre-reqs. feel free to pm with any questions. Good luck!
  9. Hey I'm in the class of '17-'18. They started sending out letters late Nov/Early Dec. Don't get discouraged, there were several ppl who waited and got letters a month or 2 later, as well as getting waitlisted or even denied, only to be accepted at a later date.
  10. Hey just reminding you guys to join our Facebook group by searching "suny downstate Nursing 2017" and requesting to join
  11. Hey- I created a facebook group for those who were accepted. it's called [h=1]Suny Downstate ABSN 2017- 2018[/h]Closed Group ask to join the group on facebook, and we'll accept your request!
  12. I believe what @thecareerchanger posted is the intensive summer schedule. The rest of the year is much more accommodating as it's only 1 day of class and 1 day of clinical per week. Have we started a FB group yet?
  13. I don't think anyone should get nervous. I'm a male applicant in a female dominated field. My friend (female) from last year's cohort said that the bulk of them got letters in Feb, while the guys got accepted in Jan. Obviously the timing may be different this year, but don't throw the towel in anytime soon. Only 3- 4 people were accepted here so far!
  14. @kooki my application is still not complete. I have yet to submit A&p2 and anthropology from this semester, as well as stats from next semester. Teas i took at the end of Nov, so i sent the scores after my application. Letters were submitted long before.
