SUNY Downstate ABSN 2017-2018

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hi there!

Haven't seen any forums yet on the SUNY Downstate ABSN 2017-2018 class. Has anyone applied?? Or heard from them already?

No, they are humanity classes. It is disheartening to have waited for half a year now.

I had a lot of "extras" because I majored in biology and chemistry. I also received 94% on TEAS V (99% national) and most As on the prereqs. I have strong rec letters and convincing essay. I don't think it is fair to delay an applicant's application just because of 2 missing prereqs.

Specializes in Med-surg, home care.

Try not to be discouraged. You have great stats and in previous threads I read people getting in as late as March or April. If it is for you it will be for you. Best wishes

Hi Everyone,

I just got an email that notified me I've been placed on the alternate list. Does anyone know if there is any sort of ranking for the list? Do stronger applicants get notified first etc? I'm so bummed! Thanks in advance for any info regarding the alternate list.

Is anyone else waiting to hear back? I'm still waiting on a decision.

I am still waiting. This is discouraging. I submitted my application in August and was forwarded in Nov. I was previously given false info regarding my prereqs several times over the email. I asked them several times about my decision, they just told me they are reviewing my application with no timetable whatsoever. The school just doesn't seem professional. I want to file a complaint.

has anybody recently heard anything from Downstate??

I am currently a sophomore in college and I think I have an interest in this program so I figured I might as well start but I feel like I'm already too late. I know that some of you have already posted your experience/the process but any further advice? Like what I should pay attention to the most? What they look at?

I haven't heard back yet. Did you? I'm still waiting on a decision. Ugh.

Me neither. It's unbelievable that the program doesn't have a timetable! And they seem proud of it.

Hi! This post is for anyone interested in applying for the accelerated nursing program for the next coming year. I too had a lot of questions and constantly consulted these threads. First, do not put your eggs in one basket! For a long time I had my mind set on applying to Stony Brook because it was cheap but it was way, way, way too far. Around summer 2016 I started to panic and looked into other schools. Luckily, the other two schools I looked into (LIU and Suny Downstate) all had around the same requirements except that Stony Brook did not require an entrance exam like the TEAS. So I began studying for the TEAS exam around June and took the exam in September. The deadline to apply was in November but they allow you to retake the exam before Dec 31. I got my results in October and submitted my application the next day, one month before the deadline. They do encourage early applications, but this wasn't my first choice so I was going out on a limb here. I applied with an cumulative GPA of 3.1 with a bachelors in Mass Communications, keep in mind the minimum requirement is a 3.0 so I barely just made it. I took all my prereqs at Queensborough Comm College and let me just say, I loved this school. I had no complaints what so ever about the students, faculty or staff. I worked full time and they have flexible class schedules for students seeking to go at night.

So, GPA 3.1, however all the pre-reqs taken at QCC I managed to earn a 4.0 GPA. TEAS exam I scored a 93 in Math and a 89 in Reading. The schools website only mentions Math and Reading and they require a minimum score of 80. Overall I scored advanced on the TEAS exam. Now, I was a little worried because there were two semesters I didn't do so great in college. I failed a few classes but retook most of them. None of these classes were listed as pre-reqs however they do ask in the application if you had any failing grades and why. I did not let this discourage me and I was honest and applied anyway. I worked full-time from my second year of college and on and I explained it took me a while to manage my time working and going to school full time. NOT everyone is the same, so I remained positive and submitted my application anyway with two recommendations from my former employers and I go accepted! Stony Brook did not accept me, LIU and SUNY did. I submitted my application late October and received a response late December.

Overall, I believe SUNY takes students from all walks of life. I was not able to attend an information session because it was always booked but I recommend for anyone interested in the program to do so. At one point I prepared not to get in but I did. Again, not everyones situation is the same, what is more attractive to one faculty member may not be to the other. I did manage to volunteer for a short period of time but school and work got in the way so I was able to commit as many hours as I wanted but I did volunteer. If you worked full time like me, incorporate how your experience relates to the world of nursing when writing your essay.

Lastly, do no let anyone else's GPA, TEAS exam discourage you. As long as you have the minimum scores required APPLY! Good luck!

I was placed on the waitlist on 2/16.. still waiting on any updates.. biting my nails >__

Has anyone on the wait-list heard back?
