Who all is taking microbiology this summer? I finally got in the class. This is the 4th week and it is an 8 week course. Right now my grade is at a high B but I'm good with that. I just want to be done with it.
My mico is 8 weeks so we are in our 5th week now. We have one more unknown and it is a biggie. We have two actually but to do as one. They are pure cultures and we are to identify them. I only just started with a gram stain today and wouldn't you know it? -- both gram negative rods.
I'm really now sure where to go from here. Any ideas?

Well I have three more weeks of this class, and then onto clinicals!!! I like this class, even though I will be glad it is over soon. I am maintaining trying to get an A, even though maintaining a B average (definately dig the Type-A personality trait AlliCat). I did my oral presentation on the Niaph virus. Just a general question to throw out to everyone. When listening to presentations, did anyone notice how many viruses and bacterial infections always cause flu-like symptoms? Now whenever I get sick I will be a little nervous LOL
I hate Microbiology. My teacher threw away all my lab experiements and I had to do them over again. What a jerk. I work 12 hour shifts Fri, Sat, Sun and he was coming in for an extra day on Friday and so were some students. My lab partner said she would come in and all the other people sitting around me said they were too so they would take out the specimens that were being incubated and leave the onces that were to "cook" over the weekend. Well they all showed up a few minutes late and the teacher had looked in the incubator and saw mine and my lab partners and just threw them out. They were in the wrong incubator and we didn't know. He said he didn't want to clean it. The students in the lab at the time didn't say anything to stop him either My lab partner walked in a few minutes later after a very long drive there and she said she just cried while he laughed. She said she would have been happy to clean the whole lab.
I was so upset today I almost cried in class but thankfully was able to stop myself. He thinks it is pretty funny the way he was acting today but I am not speaking to him. The girl across from me said if she had been there she would not have allowed that to happen. Apparently he had a dialogue with the students who were there and some guy said to just go ahead and throw it out. I am going to give him a piece of my mind! He is the most annoying guy in the class too! I wanted to really call him out today but couldn't get him alone and plus my temper was just too high.
My lab partner and I are still very upset over this and everyone at my table was playing it cool because they just couldn't believe what happened to us.
Oh and the test he gave today no one got an A on and I flunked it. He gave out the study guide on Thursday then another one over the weekend. So when am I going to have time to cover a 7 page study guide and memorize all that crap when I am working 12 hours a day?!?
And to top it off to have to listen to someone complain that they only got a B!? Give me a break.
Dear Faeriewand:
Can totally relate to your frustration! Sometimes, the summer teachers are just that: Summer Teachers. And have lost reality on how important these particular classes are for acceptance into a nursing school.
By now, you've probably calmed down and have done most of your tests on your Unknown. Take good notes on positive/negative results and use the Bergy's/Berger's (spelling /pronounciation?) Manual. They are in everymicro classrom---just ask. All of the first unknowns you'll get will be Gram negative Enterics. There's only 7-8 of them. Look through that list and compare the results there with your results and the identity of you unknown will be obvious. Look out for false-positives on the citrase and VP tests while running your own. If the Manual has different results than your own on those two, run the tests again. Sometimes it's easier to figure out what the Unknown ISN'T while narrowing it down. Hope that helps. Wish someone had told me about the Manual in the beginning. I wouldn't have stressed so much.
Best of luck!
Renee
Yes I am much calmer now. I really needed to blow off some steam. I have redone my experiments and just today started them again. The VP test just didn't come out right.
Thanks for letting me know about that manual! We do have it in our classroom. And Yes my unknowns are both G-. Thanks for your advice! :)
Only two more weeks to go in this class. I'm counting down! :chuckle
Faeriewand, glad to see you feel better!
I need to blow off some steam too. I actually enjoy my Micro class, our teacher is good, but boy does she play favorites!! She used to teach a couple other Biology subjects, so there are some students in the class that she had before--she gives them these extra perks that are kinda annoying. One girl is in my lab group, and I swear...she can barely tell the difference between an agar plate and a test tube of broth!! As many gram stains as she has done, she STILL cannot do one without asking me for help.... So of course, she never knows what we're doing in lab or why we're running what tests. And yet somehow, she gets her exams graded before everyone else...and she always gets an A~!! I must be totally missing something here....

I posted a lot of good stuff on the original Summer 2008 Micro thread:

Also, I have a lot more that I'll add there as well. Even sample quizzes and tests!
i'm taking microbiology right now during summer II, July 9 - August 18. It's very intense. I have already taken one lecture exam (98!) and then a lab practical which I made an 88 on. So right now my average for the course is at a 95.5. Wish me luck! Only 3 weeks left and 3 more lecture tests and 1 more lab practical! Good luck to everyone else!!
