Summer Entry 2012 Accelerated BSN Johns Hopkins

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

Okay I have searched far and wide to find a topic relating to this but have only found older ones... I mean come on guys the world isn't really going to end December 2012. :yeah: So here's to the 2012 application cycle!

I have a ton of questions for those who are applying and those who have applied and those who are in the program. Any and all input will be much appreciated. Also just so you know, I will be attending the October 1st open house.

If I were to describe myself, I would say grade-wise I am not the strongest candidate for JHU's nursing program as it is considered top in the nation. HOWEVER I have great experience and recommendations to cancel that out. I am also trying really really hard to make those essays seem great but only 300 words?

So to anyone reading this post, what do you think I can do to make myself a stronger applicant?

Relating to specifically JHU, I have heard a million different things about their program. From "it really sucks and is not worth it" to "best program EVER". JHU is supposed to be a school that is the leader in research and also has a global perspective. Can anyone else tell me what is so special about JHU's nursing program? What is your personal experience with it?

As far as location and campus, I think it doesn't matter as long as the educational program is incredible.

p.s. You are awesome for reading my novel. There have been many a times where I skipped over long posts. :coollook:

I'm currently residing in So. Cal. and not sure about making the move if I get in. I'm still waiting to hear back from other local schools, but JHU is a great school if I do decide to move. I have my interview tomorrow, so I'll let you guys know how it goes. Wish me luck!

Good luck! I'm excited to hear about it!

Good Luck pptrac! Let us know how it goes and maybe provide us some insights about interview questions!:yeah:

Anyone just applying for the accelerated program? Also do the accelerated go through interviews or just the master applicants ? Lastly when do regular admissions get notified if anyone knows that !!!

I think only MSN candidates get an interview. I was considering only applying for BSN then applying for MSN later but I figure it'd be nice to know that I'm in the program and you can also go part time for the MSN or pause a year in between.

thats pretty nice, I have a friend in the MSN program and she did not have an experience so that shows they look for other things which is awesome!

Hi everybody!

I just found this board recently and decided to sign up. I also applied for the JHU accelerated program! :) I wish I had been able to do early decision because the wait is going to KILL ME!!! Has anyone been to visit the campus? And if so, what was it like and how were the classrooms and people you met?

Hey guys,

Just to let you know, the interview went pretty well. I did it over the phone and it was about 45 minutes. The only thing I was worried about was awkward pauses, but we didn't really have any of that. I was interviewed by Denelle Alton, who works with admissions. She is really nice and it felt very informal, like two friends having a conversation.

She asked me a lot of basic questions that you would usually get in an interview, such as: Why choose nursing, JHU, your specialty? What experiences do you have to offer to the program? What current issues in nursing are you interested in? What are you goals? Rate yourself in terms of skill level, and then she lists some skills for you, such as researching, public speaking, etc...& some other ones I am forgetting at the moment.

I think the best strategy is be yourself and know yourself. Be comfortable talking about your life, goals, experiences, etc... I hope this helps and good luck everyone.

Awesome! That sounds really good pttrac! Thanks for the insight as well.

Hey SarJon123, welcome to the thread. I had a chance to visit the campus and it was wonderful. I met the president of nursing students (her name alludes me now) but she was super nice and down-to-earth. Everyone I have ever spoken on the phone with has not only been helpful but friendly as well. If you ever get a chance, the online chats also show how supportive the admissions staff is.

As for the class rooms...honestly one of their main ones could use a little updating but otherwise everything else is new and the medical library is right next to it as well. There is also free printing which is nice. They are also opening a new hospital nearby in April. Lots of opportunities...the faculty at the open house also seemed to know about a lot of opportunities.

I would have totally applied for the masters as well for the interview but I have no idea what I may want to study!

Anyway, having this forum is so nice because it does alleviate the waiting a bit.

I want to do the thing that has the most competition it seems FNP although I think I want to specialize in pediatrics. FNP can work with those 3 and older and that seems good to me. I also accept that I may change my mind later and have to work through whatever hurdles I may need to in order to change.

Yes I couldn't decide between fnp or midwifery. Honestly I want to see them in action before I decide. Although knowing you are accepted into a masters program would give me peace of mind.
