study tips and best way to study meds

Published

Does anyone have any better way to study meds, coz even when i't in school this is really my hated subject... i'ts really hard for me. They all sound the same, with same side effects.

It's going to be my second time taking the boars so I really need to pass this time!

And is there any tips on how to study better, Iam used in momorizing stuff (that is what i'm used to), and now there is a lot of topics to study and i find it very confusing now. I find myself looking back to the previous stuff that I already studied and it is taking a lot of time. I'm having an overload, and my brain seems to be deleting some of the things that I studied.

I think i'm in trouble!

There was a thread posted earlier that I found helpful titled "Best way to study meds". It listed a quick reference of suffixes and what type of meds they were. Might help remembering types of meds. The only other thing I can offer is to study the classes & side effects.....but that was never successful for me. Remembering meds is definately a weakness for me. Good luck...:D

Yeah what luv'nlife said. I told someone before that the best way to learn meds was to learn the prefixes and suffixes. It helps categorize the meds so that you learn them as a class, as opposed to trying to remember each specific med. And within each class their will be some meds that will stand out more than others and those are the ones you want to memorize. Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the reply... I'll try what you suggested, I really appreciate it!

Thanks a million! :loveya:

No problem.

Can you please let me know what you printed or how I can get the same material........I am in the same boat as you trying to study these meds...............please let me know thank you

hello,

a technique I used when I studied was to try to associate a medication with the category of how the nursing content is broken down in.

eg: endocrine

gasrointestinal

respiratory

cardio

renal

etc.

once you know the basic category, then focus on function. Why and what the medication does that puts it into the category. Usually the pharm companies try to name the meds with the same ending or beginning but that is not always the case. There are so much meds out there that you can't know them all but narrow it down to the popular ones, the frequently used ones. When I took my NCLEX, there were meds I had no idea what they did (and i studied a lot of meds)...I did my best not to panic. I read the questions and looked for clues within the answers and used an educated guess based on what I studied. The key I believe is to take your time, do not rush, it is not a racing contest...when you study, understanding the content...it is an obvious point but often forgotten in the rush of learning it all...I passed with the turtle (slow and steady wins the race) technique.

Good luck! Hope this helps

thank you so much that is very good advice!!

Have you tired using Suzanne's plan? The focus of her plan is to help you pass the NCLEX but she also has some tips and extra stuff she sends you to study meds. She should be in the NCLEX discussion forum. She has some requirements that you need to do before she gives all of her studying directions but I highly recommend her approach. I passed on my second try with her plan. Good luck :nurse:
