Study skills, please share...

With A & P, the thing that helped me the most was to study/read every day. There is no way to cram it all in the day before a test. Depending on how you learn, you can use flash cards, anatomy coloring books, and online videos in addition to your textbook. My professor tests off her powerpoints, so I focus on those and then read the textbook at the same time for more in depth understanding.

I had a much harder time with Micro. But I guess the same techniques apply...study some every day, look for different ways to learn. Read, videos, study guides, etc.

Some people like study groups as well. I personally study better on my own but the key is to find what works best for you.

With AP 2 I spent a lot of time in the lab like if I needed to memorize muscles I would look at the skeleton and just keep repeating it's name until I had it memorized. Then I'd do the next and keep building off the first until I could picture each muscle and it's name in my head. Another way this can be used with micro is writing things down multiple times. I have notebooks filled with repetition but it helped me study!

Rather than trying to memorize everything, try and understand the material first. It may click more if you dont try and just memorize everything all at once. Also, just looking over everything everyday will help you retain the information.

My psychology professor told my class once that people tend to retain more information if they study in 20 minute increments. Study something for 20 minutes, take a break for 10 min, and so on. It seems like it it would take forever to cover chapters and terms but its helped me out a lot! I also use flash cards and have friends and family test me all the time. Buddying up with someone in class wouldn't hurt either. You guys can help each other out. Whatever ever you do, don't cram. Remember, "Study long, study wrong". Good luck to you in your classes! :)

I think memorizing everything and every line of the book is somewhat difficult. I personally think you need to understand the basics of the subject and understand the concept behind every topic. Also you can do practice nurse preparation by solving various test solutions and joining a various study groups. You will get a verity of general knowledge beside your subject and will help to understand subject. Sharing your knowledge will increase your knowledge.

I preview what we're doing in class before I go in. So in A&P I'll preview the chapter we're going to read. Or if it's micro lab I'll read through the lab. During class I record lectures and take really basic notes. My goal with notes is to write key words. After class I re-listen to my lecture and take more detailed notes, making sure that my key words are defined and the concepts they encompass are fully understood.

I find that by previewing and reviewing I'm getting exposed to the material before and after every class and learning 9x a week (if I have class 3 x a weeks 3 previews, 3 classes, 3 reviews.

It always helps me to put things into my own words. I am in A & P 2 now and we get power points to study off of that are based off book material. I go home, retype or rewrite the power points and combine info from my textbook. It helps a lot because while I do this, I am actually learning the material by breaking it down, explaining it to myself and rewording all the info. I get paid by my school to provide a copy of my notes to another girl in my class who has a learning disability & was in both A & P 1 and 2 with me. My notes have helped both her and myself do better.
