this weekend is my grandmothers anniversary. my entire family is going to be there. i have an exam on monday, and the next monday after that i have finals. i will lose fri, sat, and sun just driving to san fransisco.
i have a borderline grade. if i fail the final i have to wait a year and retake the entire semester.... that means a whole extra year of clinicals etc.. should i take that chance?
i have nothing to fall back on. i'm too stressed out to be partying and having fun.
what should i do? i hate this situation! what would you do?
Absolutely stay home and study! Write your GM a nice long letter enclosed in a big beautiful card. There is no way I would want you to risk your education coming to my BD if I was your GM. She will treasure and re-read your letter for a very long time time to come.At this small window of time out of your life your education absolutely must come first and foremost over everything else. The only exception I would make to that would be a funeral for immediate family only. If you're NOT busy at school then do attend family things if you can, but if there's a choice to be made, school must come first.
I am sorry to disagree with you, BUT FAMILY IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN YOUR LIFE. You don't know how long you have with them. Life is short, sometimes too short. She can do both study and visit.
you got some good advice. i'm curious as to what you have decided.
some ideas: if you decide to go, is there a way that you could put what you need to study for on disk or ipod or whatever ppl use now and listen to it in the car-you know, like recording yourself going over the notes. the poster that suggested flash cards if someone will ride with you and the person testing you, was good. studying as much as you can while you're there too, maybe?
if you decide not to go: do you have a web cam or access to a video camera. you could send a nice greeting and speech and sort of be there for the occassion...
just some suggestions-sometimes these decisions can be hard when you want something so bad. i hope you keep us posted.

There must be someone who can drive you. Pack yourself up into the car and use the ride to study. If you're the type that get's a little motion sick reading in a car then think about taking a little dramamine. Go to the party and enjoy yourself, but do not drink to excess or do anything that would keep you from studying before bed - maybe even leave a little early from the party to hit the books. Then you have the entire drive back for more review.
Bonus idea: Make up some flash cards and have other people in the car quiz you! I always found that flashcards were my strongest weapon in my study orificenal. My classmates knew that i always had my flash cards with me and we'd use every opportunity to flip through them and quiz each other.
