Studied Abroad - How do I transfer my credentials?

Published

Hey everyone,

I just signed up with this forum and so far so good. Anyways, I am a US Citizen, born and raised in Texas. I moved to India in 2008. I recently graduated and just recieved all of my certificates, provisional degree and documents that allows me to be an RN in India. However, I will not be working in India at all, I am trying to figure out how can I transfer everything to the California Nursing Counsil. Please help me on what I need to do. So far I have:

1. Breakdown of Educational Program for International Nursing Program

2. All 4 years marks card (in English "transcript")

3. Provisional Degree (Allows me to work in India)

I have read a lot on how foriegners can transfer their credentials to the US, but not Americans that studied abroad. I am trying to come back to the states as soon as possible, thanks for the support!

Ok, I'll make this clear. I graduated from a University in India. I am a registered nurse in India, however, I am an American. here are my questions.

1. Do I have to take the NCLEX before getting my American Licence?

2. Should I take the NCLEX and then mail my Documents (and to whom/where) OR

3. Can I mail my documents to the appropriate destination and THEN take my NCLEX exams in the states?

The plan is to come back to the states to take the NCLEX in Houston, I want my documents to be in the states before I Register.

1.Pasing the NCEX is just part of the licensing process. You have to meet the requirements of the BON before you will be alowed to write tCLEX.

2.You cannot take the NCLEX until you have satisfied the requirements of the BON.

3.You need to apply and find out exactly what they want and how it is to be mailed.

It doesn't matter where you take the NCLEX.What do you mean by "register" Register for what?

Well, over here they register for their Indian nursing licence, I assumed I would have to register for a licence in Cali as well

Do you want to work in CA or TX?

Cali for a couple years and then settle in Texas

I suggest you start by reading all the threads about California nursing including threads about IENs and concurrency issues as well as threads about nurse unemployment in CA.

Also take a look at the CA BON website and the TX BON website.

Nope. You APPLY for a nursing license. If you meet the requirements of the BON then you can write the NCLEX.

Just giving you a heads up. Your nursing school curriculum must meet the same criteria that schools in California and Texas require for their students to graduate and then successfully test NCLEX before being issued a license to practice professionally.

Foreign schools' curricula freq does not match the programs here in the States. That's why so many foreign-educated nurses (and physicians) cannot get licensed to practice here. So you see many foreign-educated doctors working as lab techs or RTs or something tangentially related to health care. Filipino nurses freq run into the same problems.

There's no getting around it - you can only follow what the Board dictates!

And most importantly, WHO told you to mail your documents to Sacramento? Be absolutely sure it was officially the Board who specifically requested your documents (not your cousin, next-door neighbor or friend, etc!).

To Shawn: I noticed you didn't mention having a BSN degree, but is that the same as the provisional degree? You did say you have a 4 years mark card so that's the BSN degree?

As mentioned you can not sit NCLEX until you meet the rest of the state requirements. Regardless of being a US citizen you trained outside the US therefore will always be treated as an International trained nurse and have to meet that state requirements even when endorsing. Most states/institutions will not accept documents you send unless in a envelope sealed by the institution and stamped by them so that they can see no tampering has been done (not saying you will but it has been done and therefore the states have put protective measures in place)

Yes I have a B.Sc Nursing Degree. It is exactly like a provisional degree, and I have a 4 years mark card

I understand, but to how do i apply to CA BON. If I am doing the Fingerprint Method, where I have to go to a police station in the states, and mail the card and all my documents in a sealed enevelope, with an American Check (because I am an American) how can I do so if I am in India? I have quite a dilemma.
