Students on the MCC waiting list: lets get a jump start on studying

U.S.A. Arizona

Published

Hello! I have currently turned in my application to the Maricopa Community Colleges, and now I wait for my name to be called for nursing school. BUT, I have decided to make the 'best' of my wait by getting a study group started. I want to start nursing school with a leg up. I would like to get a group of those that are in waiting to study. I have 4 text books in mind that I would like to get through in a year to year and a half. I was in block one of nursing school, 2 weeks until the end of the block, and I had to quit. The decision was a rough one, but one that had to be made at that time. SO, on the bright side I do have some knowledge as to what nursing school is about and we can help each other study.

If you are interested, have the time, are committed, aren't a slacker, want to start nursing school off on the right foot, and can drive to the Glendale/Peoria area once or twice a week for a few hours, have hours to read text books on your own, then let me know.

We will all need:

Potter and Perry Nursing Fundamentals 6th or 7th editions

Lewis Med-Surg (I will have to research the editions)

Pharmacology (again I will research the editions)

NCLEX study guide

iPod touch or the application iFlipr from iTunes (was $4.99 the last time I saw it), to share making and using flashcards

We can be off by an edition, either way, that won't make such a big deal and some times the newest edition is too darn expensive until we absolutely HAVE to buy it.

I would like to meet on Saturdays or Sundays, to start, then we will see what works best for most of us. I would like to meet at GCC's library or Peoria library, or Glendale library, or a park.

If this sounds like something you could commit to, then let me know and let's start studying! :yeah:

Specializes in Med/Surg/Tele/Acute Rehab.

1. Pathophysiology will help them more. They will learn nursing process in nursing school. Too much for pre-nursing students. I think that resource is a bit much, for anyone. Kind of all over the place and abstract.

2. Good resource. Bad link. http://www.amazon.com/Nurses-Quick-Check-Diseases-NURSES/dp/158255305X

3. Not familiar with that one. Pricey. Here is an inexpensive alternative ($25): http://www.informedguides.com/index.cfm?event=product.detail&productID=27&categoryName=viewAll&ht=Nurses%20Pocket%20Guide%26trade%3B

It also comes as an iPhone app for $10.

Specializes in WOUND CARE, MEMORY CARE, GERIATRICS.

I read you have been a nurse a "a bazillion years" :heartbeat and maybe you are a nursing instructor as well; :nurse: Regardless, my experience as a student is much more recent. I just finished nursing school and from the Maricopa Community Colleges in Phoenix too. :)

My study group and I would of have love to know these two resources existed back when we began nursing school.

Even if we would of needed to pool our resources to be able to afford them, we would have purchase the CD because the information contained in the books I did purchase is what we needed to be successful in learning the material that was given to us to learn.

What you said about The book "Nurses Quick Check: Diseases Second Edition"; "I think that resource is a bit much, for anyone. Kind of all over the place and abstract." We as a group disagree, this book was the best resource we had to complete our care plans. for the following reasons:

1. The Diagnosis are in alphabetical order, in two pages or less

2. It gives you a quick Overview of the disease process

3. The Assessment, like physical findings and what to look for in test results

4. Treatment such what medications are normally used for the treatment of a given diagnosis

5. Nursing Considerations (which is what is going be ask of the nursing student to know in quizzes) such Expected Outcomes of treatment, nursing interventions, and what a nurse needs to monitor for,

6. Patient teaching including Discharge planning (something a nursing student would be ask to know in their care plans every single time because discharge planning begins at admission.

At the end of the day I just wish this group the best in their quest may "The Lady of the Lamp" be a part of their graduating ceremony. :)

Umm, that's not what I said. I was talking about the nursing process document. But, those are just my opinions.

I would be really interesting in participating in this study group as well. Are you guys still on for Mid-April? Desert Ridge Area would be the best for me, but I am open. Let me know. Thanks!

So here's where we are. Starz_girl didn't think studying with me would he helpful for her since I have a different book than her. AmandaLeigh is getting married so she's consumed with all that and won't be ready until later. I'm still game to at least meet and hold eachother accountable to reading and compare our findings regardless what book we have. I have Foundations and Adult Health Nursing by Kockrow, Basic Pharm by Clayton, Stock and Harroun Let know

Mica/KF,

Yes, I am definitely still interested in the study group. I'm getting married in 2 weeks from Sat so I'm a tad bit on the busy side until then. Also, I fell and fractured my fibula while I was in Vegas last weekend for my bachelorette party. LOL :lol2: Needless to say, now I have something else to deal with besides wedding planning. It is a minor fracture so I doubt I will be too debilitated to get around and meet up you guys for some studying on the weekends.

I will be ready to meet up with you both the weekend of April 10th. Just let me know which day and what time. My schedule that weekend is pretty much open. However, I would rather meet up at Desert Ridge. Maybe the Starbucks inside the Barnes and Noble would be a good place to get together. Let me know what you think.

The starbucks at Desert Ridge works for me, I am waiting to decide whether to take patho until after the placement run next Tuesday. Saturdays work for me as well. I don't have any books yet, but I am open to getting whatever.

KF,

If your date time stamp was 2/09 I'm sure you'll get in Fall 2010. My date time stamp was 8/09 so I may have to wait until Spring 2011 though...unless some kind of miracle happens. LOL

I registered to take Patho this summer @ SCC along with CHM130 since I plan to go straight to ASU after the Maricopa ADN is done. I would wait until the fall semester, but I'm taking a CNA class since I will need to work while I'm in school. I work full time days now, but will not have an option to work PT or nights/weekends. Also, I am not willing to wait at least an additional year to get into a PT or weekend program since those are so low capacity. Not worth it to me. CNA exp will look great on my resume anyway! :nurse:

I guess we could always wait until you find out if you got placed for Fall 2010 and then get those books. Then I could get the same books and study from those. I'm sure I'd be able to eventually use those books the following semester too so why not!

I think it is possible I might get placed, but from what I am seeing from other posts is that there are ALOT of people timestamped for 8/08, going clear up to 8:07+ that still need to be placed. But we'll see! Where did you get your CNA from?? Yeah, Tuesday seems so far away, but I'll let you know and we can go from there. As long as we have the same or similar books I think we would be fine.

I saw your other post where you mentioned that you turned in your application in that June 1st - July 31st timeframe and got an October time stamp. I turned in my application in the same timeframe in 2009 and got an Aug 14th time stamp. Weird...maybe they stamped them differently in 2009.

I will take the CNA course at PVCC in the fall. I was thinking about getting it done much faster somewhere else, but am a bit concerned about my safety. I've been to PVCC before and feel comfortable there. Also, I'm not really in any rush to get the CNA cert since I wont begin the RN program until Jan of 2011 anyway.

Yeah, I know what you mean about Tuesday seeming so far away...it always is when you're expecting something big to happen...GL on getting placed! It sounds like you've waited long enough and since you have 5 choices you should be good to go! ;)

Oh, I think I must have confused you, I'm sorry! lol. I actually have a Feb 2009 timestamp but I was saying that the Aug timestamp was a large group because of ppl who submitted their application June and July. Did I say october? my bad. I know SCC has a CNA program, and I went there to get my pre-reqs and I really liked it...
