Students on the MCC waiting list: lets get a jump start on studying

U.S.A. Arizona

Hello! I have currently turned in my application to the Maricopa Community Colleges, and now I wait for my name to be called for nursing school. BUT, I have decided to make the 'best' of my wait by getting a study group started. I want to start nursing school with a leg up. I would like to get a group of those that are in waiting to study. I have 4 text books in mind that I would like to get through in a year to year and a half. I was in block one of nursing school, 2 weeks until the end of the block, and I had to quit. The decision was a rough one, but one that had to be made at that time. SO, on the bright side I do have some knowledge as to what nursing school is about and we can help each other study.

If you are interested, have the time, are committed, aren't a slacker, want to start nursing school off on the right foot, and can drive to the Glendale/Peoria area once or twice a week for a few hours, have hours to read text books on your own, then let me know.

We will all need:

Potter and Perry Nursing Fundamentals 6th or 7th editions

Lewis Med-Surg (I will have to research the editions)

Pharmacology (again I will research the editions)

NCLEX study guide

iPod touch or the application iFlipr from iTunes (was $4.99 the last time I saw it), to share making and using flashcards

We can be off by an edition, either way, that won't make such a big deal and some times the newest edition is too darn expensive until we absolutely HAVE to buy it.

I would like to meet on Saturdays or Sundays, to start, then we will see what works best for most of us. I would like to meet at GCC's library or Peoria library, or Glendale library, or a park.

If this sounds like something you could commit to, then let me know and let's start studying! :yeah:

Kf and Amanda,

I'm am going back home to San Francisco for the weekend of the 15th, actually I'm leaving on Thursday. You two can meet and just fill me in if that works. Then we can meet later, first weekend in June? I too look forward to our new addition in July. Just let me know what the plan is :)

I was wondering if you guys are still having your get together to study and prep for entry into block one. If so are you opposed to having a male join your group?

I am on the "hurry up and wait list" for MCCC and just had interview with Banner Fellows Program on Friday and keeping my fingers crossed that I get selected for July CoHort.

Let m eknow your thoughts. Thanks.

Wanna Be, sure we have no prob welcoming a new addition to our group. We sort-of set up a meet time for June 5th at 11am Desert ridge SBUX. Good Luck getting into the Banner program

Well if you guys do decide to make June 5th @ 11am a firm date and time please let me know. Wouldn't mind getting together and studying with you guys to get leg up for future block one.

Thanks :)

I would LOVE to be a part of this!! I can't submit my app until after Summer. Do you guys mind if I join? I am still new to the area so I am not sure where exactly that SBUX is  Also, will I need all the materials mentioned before, on that day?

Thanks guys!! ::yeah:

Also, today I met with ------- at EMCC and she said there is NO more Banner program as of LAST week!! OYE! Have I been misinformed? Did I misunderstand? Or am I screwed blued and tattooed?

When I applied to Mesa Boswell earlier this week the advisor told me that the Banner Fellowship program is being phased out. If you go to the maricopa nursing program site it will tell you. People who applied for the July cohort are ok. After them the program will be ceased. Here is the link...

Just a word of caution for all of those starving students out there (i'm in block 2 and know I'm not the only one!), these books might not stay the same for when you start the program. You may invest in these texts, and need to buy new ones should your campus have a different text, or the edition changes. I spent almost $800 my first semester on books alone (and I bought lots of used books!)

I would suggest buying an NCLEX book so you get used to critical thinking type questions. I really like Saunders & Zerwekeh (sp??) NCLEX review books. I'm not sure if I'd suggest buy the other ones and start studying like that yet....... but best of luck! :) I can tell you are motivated :)

I'm not on the wait list anymore, will start at Gateway CC in Oct., but one book that I did buy ahead of time was the Saunders NCLEX book by Linda Silvestri. I've seen very many people here at allnurses recommend it as a prep study guide to use while you are in school. I also got the Kaplan "Math for Nurses" book which covers dosage calculations and conversions. That will always come in handy even after becoming an RN. As far as buying other textbooks ahead of time goes, I'd either wait or get used books online that won't cost too much because as you note, many of these change from semester to semester. One thing I have done is go back and review all of my textbooks from my prereqs like A&P, microbiology, etc, because waiting for a year and a half like I did means that some of what you learned earlier can get sort of fuzzy - one of the bad things about this wait list stuff......

The study group idea itself is a good one though - I would have gone in with it had I just been put on the wait list but since I am so close now I'm going to concentrate on refreshing what I took earlier for now......

AZRN2B... I'm at Gateway too in October. It will be nice to know someone else going into the program with me!

Yes, it will :) Haven't even started yet and already I've met someone else who's going - a good sign... Let's keep in touch - you can send me a private msg if you'd like. I don't know about you, but I have so many questions about all this, like where we are going to be doing our clinicals, how big our cohort will be, what classes exactly we will be taking in block 1, etc. We're supposed to be getting an info packet in the mail sometime but I don't know when that will be.... It's just nice to know that the waiting is pretty much over now:yeah:

AZ_RN2B-Are you saying you're doing the Banner cohort at Gateway in Oct 2010? Or does Gateway have an Oct cohort that's accelerated? Just curious, as we were told that the July 2010 Banner cohort is the last one and the program is no longer after that class...

For those who are starting to study. That is awesome! I am enjoying not studying, so I am sure I'll be at a bit of a disadvantage when I start :) He, he...
