Students on the MCC waiting list: lets get a jump start on studying

U.S.A. Arizona

Published

Hello! I have currently turned in my application to the Maricopa Community Colleges, and now I wait for my name to be called for nursing school. BUT, I have decided to make the 'best' of my wait by getting a study group started. I want to start nursing school with a leg up. I would like to get a group of those that are in waiting to study. I have 4 text books in mind that I would like to get through in a year to year and a half. I was in block one of nursing school, 2 weeks until the end of the block, and I had to quit. The decision was a rough one, but one that had to be made at that time. SO, on the bright side I do have some knowledge as to what nursing school is about and we can help each other study.

If you are interested, have the time, are committed, aren't a slacker, want to start nursing school off on the right foot, and can drive to the Glendale/Peoria area once or twice a week for a few hours, have hours to read text books on your own, then let me know.

We will all need:

Potter and Perry Nursing Fundamentals 6th or 7th editions

Lewis Med-Surg (I will have to research the editions)

Pharmacology (again I will research the editions)

NCLEX study guide

iPod touch or the application iFlipr from iTunes (was $4.99 the last time I saw it), to share making and using flashcards

We can be off by an edition, either way, that won't make such a big deal and some times the newest edition is too darn expensive until we absolutely HAVE to buy it.

I would like to meet on Saturdays or Sundays, to start, then we will see what works best for most of us. I would like to meet at GCC's library or Peoria library, or Glendale library, or a park.

If this sounds like something you could commit to, then let me know and let's start studying! :yeah:

Yeah...I'm registered for section # 14613.

AmandaLeigh,

Congrats on getting Married! I unforunately have had a death in the family and will be flying to Utah Sat morning for the memorial services. I know this is when we all planned to meet up, so I am really bummed out. Maybe you guys can meet and decide a gameplan and I can jump in on the next one?

Mica, did you get the Banner thing figured out? They said they are accepting the old apps and have extended the due date to April 16th...

I'm so sorry to hear about your emergency :crying2: Safe Travels.

I think we can come up with a good game plan and share. Since Banner accepted the "old" apps I didn't have to do anything else except, cross my fingers and pray.

Amanda, congrats btw, see you and whom ever else wants to join on Saturday at 11

How did your meeting go?

kf, sorry to take so long to get back to you. I've been looking all over for your e-mail address, I was sure I had it somewhere. So, here's what Amanda and I came up with.

She doesn't have a book yet so we used mine as a guide it's: Foundations and Adult Health Nursing by Kockrow if you have something different that's A-ok.

We thought we would just dive in and start with care plans (since they take students forever to write). I thought we should start with the very common diseases first, Cardiovascular, Pulmonology, Diabetes...then move through to death and dying. Our next meet up time is Saturday, April 24th 11 am at the Desert ridge SBUX by the theater. sound good?

No worries! I know there have been some recommended books specifically for care plans on this thread and in other posts, maybe those would be a good idea? I'll put the date on my calendar. Banner cut-off date for apps is Friday! I hope they start interviews soon after!

Mica/KF,

Unfortunately, I will not be able to join you two on Sat for the study session. However, I will try to keep up on my reading/studying. I believe we are just focusing on care plans for now.

If either of you wouldn't mind letting me know which topic I should read/study next and when we are planning on meeting up again.

Thanks,

Amanda

Hi I just discovered this site and I think your idea is awesome! I am German and will be in Phoenix in July. Hopefully I can get started at the 23. Aug but if not than hopefully in January. I would love to join this group if I can't get started in August. But I don't have any experience yet. Can you tell me the book you are using and what u r doing so I can start here and maybe keep up with you to join the group as soon as I am there? Would be great to hear from you.

Jill

Amanda & K,

are we still on board to meet on Saturday at 11? I have done minimal reading as I'm studying for my Patho final but there has been some crossover in the two books so I think it will be of some value. How's the reading coming?

Jill, We would love to have another study partner. I'm sure I mentioned the book in an earlier post in this thread, sorry, can't recall what it is now. If you don't see it let me know, it's at home (and I'm at work now). You are welcome to pm me if you have any other questions. Have you applied to Nursing School yet, there's nearly a two year wait out here. I can answer/help you with any of the application stuff. Take care

Mica/KF,

I will not be able to attend on Saturday. I have to squeeze in some quality family time this weekend and Saturday was the only day that everyone could get together. I will try to keep up on my reading though. I may fall behind a bit since my husband and I will be on our honeymoon during the last 2 weeks of May. Then I start CHM130 the following week after we get back.

Maybe we can have a much more consistent reading/study schedule in July. Then we can include the newest addition to our study group at that time as well. :p

Should we shoot for next Saturday the 15th instead? That might work better for me as well.

KF,

I could swing that...same time and place? Desert Ridge Starbucks @ 11am on the 15th?
