Maryville University FNP Program Recent Student's Reviews

I had an appointment this past week with an admission's advisor for the Maryville U online FNP program. I was really impressed with how she described the program and since our conversation I have been able to easily get in touch with her through email. I can not say the same for University of Cincinnati. I have emailed my advisor and she has yet to get in touch with me nor call me back. Simmons College's advisor has also been very helpful and is great with the follow up phone calls. This makes me think that these are my two programs that I will apply. My only concern is, that when I research Maryville's program on here to read reviews I have seen a lot of mixed reviews. Most of these reviews were from a year or so back when the program was still so new to online. What I would like to know is how are current Maryville students liking the program? Is it user friendly? Work load manageable with working and family life? Do you feel like the program is giving you a great education and preparing you to become a well versed and knowledgable FNP that will pass boards?

Are you dead set on a DNP program? If not Simmons is a great school online for military family members (I am an Army Veterans wife myself), I have several friends who are military spouses in the program, one being my best friend who started the cohort behind me =) There is a facebook page you can ask questions to as well.

I guess I am not dead set on the DNP at this exact moment as long as I can get it after the MSN/FNP... Can you tell me your experience with Simmons?

Would be glad to. Send me a private message or connect with me on Facebook or Email =) Just click on my profile =) Also you can do a search on Allnurses for Simmons posts.

Well, I am enrolled in the BSN to DNP program at Maryville and I just finished my first class, so far so good, I like the program and my instructors are great and willing to work with the students, so,right now, it's going great I don't know what will happen later but I know I made the right decision with Maryville.

Hi shadygirl,

thanks for your post! because i just applied to Maryville and hope to start late summer.

there are so many NP programs out there and i feel like you just have to go with your gut instincts. i saw someone post something about Simmons college online NP program, this college charges 1,274.00 per credit hr!? i have been doing my research for about 4 months and have applied to several schools that i liked. good luck in your endeavors! :-)

Hello,

I am applying now and was wondering how long it took to get an answer for acceptance and what your essay looked like. I have sent mine in and am hoping to attend the june class.. fingers crossed..

I am glad to here it.. I am so worried about choosing the wrong school

so do you choose your prof's or are they assigned,,, if so could name some that complete the adobe connect?

Hi Ajrinicu,

So sorry it took this long for me to reply your post, I have been slammed both at work and school, the past couple of weeks have been crazy. To answer your question, the professor are pre assigned , you don't get to chose your Professors and if I may ask, do you live in Hamilton near Fairfield Ohio? I live in South Lebanon, a suburb of Cincinnati and I'm just wondering if it's the same Hamilton that I know, good luck with everything, you will love Maryville!

I know of 5 people where I used to work that graduated/graduating soon in Maryville. They have positive feedbacks. My clinical supervisor was a student, she wrote me a recommendation and she is very encouraging with MVU. So this is the only school I applied to and I got accepted to start this August. After two university degrees, class lectures I feel are sometimes a waste of time. It is only good if your teacher is great at deducing a concept to layman's term then putting it in a big picture. Other teachers just read powerpoints and I can do that at home.

I just completed the application process and now waiting to hear about acceptance. I am REALLY nervous about being accepted but the admission counselor told me she like to be about 99% sure when she submits the file for review. Still I'm nervous. I am expecting to start in October. So far I have nothing but positive feelings. The counselor stays in frequent contact with me and has very helpful. Every time I call or email I get a very quick response. I have been reading through some old thread on experiences at MU to see what others are saying. So far I am pleased and excited to get this started! To all you who are a few semesters in how is it going?

nnm 519,

I have been a Maryville student since May 2014. I now have 4 classes to go until I finish. The biggest challenge is the amount of group work that is required in the program. In many cases this is not a big deal as long as you have responsible people in your group. I have had mixed luck thus far; however, if you are a responsible person, you will be fine. The biggest thing to remember about online work is that it is a lot of work - writing, blogs and discussion posts, versus an on-campus classroom. Once you get the hang of things, you'll be fine. What I like most about Maryville is that it is only one class every 8 weeks (except when you get to advanced patho and pharm). I find it is easier to focus on just one class at a time. Also, the fact that you don't have to fly to the school to do advanced assessment is another selling point for me. I didn't want to be away from my family for 2 weeks. Many people in other programs complained that MVU's program was too long, however, they stressed out because they had to complete their program in 2 years (some less) while working full time. Even the MVU counselors will say that most students will cut down to part time in order to finish. While I have not started clinical yet (I start next week), I do not plan on doing this. I think the 32 month program offered through MVU makes it manageable to balance school and work. For people who have a family, this is ideal. Don't get me wrong; it's still a lot of work at times, but it's doable.

nm519,

I have been in the BSN to DNP (FNP) program since January 2015 and just like SW514 said, it is doable as long as you are dedicated and manage your time wisely. I have been lucky with groups so far, my group members have been exceptional and everyone is always ready to do their part of the assignment having said that, graduate school can be very challenging and it takes a lot of hardwork, discipline, and efficient time management on your part but if I can do it I am absolutely sure you can do it too, goodluck with everything!
