I had an appointment this past week with an admission's advisor for the Maryville U online FNP program. I was really impressed with how she described the program and since our conversation I have been able to easily get in touch with her through email. I can not say the same for University of Cincinnati. I have emailed my advisor and she has yet to get in touch with me nor call me back. Simmons College's advisor has also been very helpful and is great with the follow up phone calls. This makes me think that these are my two programs that I will apply. My only concern is, that when I research Maryville's program on here to read reviews I have seen a lot of mixed reviews. Most of these reviews were from a year or so back when the program was still so new to online. What I would like to know is how are current Maryville students liking the program? Is it user friendly? Work load manageable with working and family life? Do you feel like the program is giving you a great education and preparing you to become a well versed and knowledgable FNP that will pass boards?

You are not the only one with issues getting in touch with the advisers at UC. I too applied there (I"m still on wait week 6) and it's usually 2-3 days before she ever returns my calls. I'm not sure if it's due to the fact they are non-profit, and don't have the staffing for the applicants to call or what. I have received more emails and calls from her in the past two weeks (giving me updates that they have not made a decision on my application) than I did this whole past 6wks of waiting. They do have an excellent pass rate through and their online program has been around for awhile. I used to live near Cincinnati and it is a great school with a strong nursing program. As far as Simmons goes, they are excellent with communication usually within an hour or two in fact of an email I got responses. Maryville was on my list too, but after the first few initial calls, it's like they didn't want to call back. I gave up and applied elsewhere but I haven't heard anything too bad about them. I know my friend in KY couldn't attend there due to KY not approving that school for some reason, so since her and I want to do this together we looked for a college that is approved in both our states. =) Good luck with your apps and your decisions!
When you typed your essay for UC did you use APA format?
I double spaced it, and at the top left corner put my Name, RN, address and phone number...more like a business letter =)

I began Maryville's FNP online distance program in may. I have worked 60 hrs most weeks and get my homework done during the week at work so I am able to spend my home time with my family. I have gotten almost all A's so far and feel the work is manageable. It does seem even the group that started a couple cohorts before me have had issues but so far I have been happy. I think there are issues with all schools but it is about finding a good fit for you and putting in the work. I believe your life/education is what you make it.
I really appreciate your response! I have been so impressed with how quickly my advisor gets in touch with me and how helpful/nice she has been. It makes me feel like I will have a good experience with Maryville. I was quoted $34,000 not including books, or technology fees. Have you found the price of tuition has increased once you became a student? Can you describe a typical week of school/assignments since you have started? Also my advisor has stated that you have classes and interactions with your teacher and cohort. Do you find that classes are helpful and do you feel like you teach yourself the material? I would like some guidance and teaching with advance patho... Also I expect to put in 24-30 hours a week. Do you find this accurate or do you feel more or less time is required? I appreciate all your advice! Sorry for all of the questions!
I was quoted 43,000 not including books (not sure about technology fees). I spend usually no more than 5-10 hrs a week on school on average. There are lots of group projects/discussions which can be a pain depending on how well your groups work together and plan. I do not have much interaction with the teachers. So far the information has just delved deeper into the BSN program. Next semester I have advanced patho and pharm so hopefully it will be more learning. I had been looking into a program that was accelerated and would have finished in a year. I did not get into that program so sometimes this program seems slow but i have to keep reminding myself that I am moving forward AND I work quite a bit with some time to play thrown it; I don't think that would have been the case in the other program. I hope this has helped!

I started in August and was quoted around the 34K range. Since starting the program, our graduation date has been pushed back a semester, so that will add another 4-5K. My first class was awful, but I believe that was very much due to the instructor. It would take up to two weeks to get grades back only to see that points were taken off for random things not mentioned in the grading rubrics. I easily spent 25-30 hours per week doing work for that class. The class I'm in now is a completely different story. Instructor is very good about feedback and answering questions and I spend probably about 15 hours a week doing work. I'm very nervous for advanced patho and pharm next semester though.

angRN05 why was your graduation date pushed back?
Overall are you happy that you are attending MVU? Do you feel like you are receiving a good education that will sufficiently prepare you to be a knowledgable FNP? Do you spend a lot of time teaching yourself the material or do you feel like you learn a lot from the instructors as well?
I think the date was changed due to previous semesters comments of having one of the clinical classes with another class was too much, although no official explanation was ever given. As far as learning, so far I've only had the two classes that were really more paper writing than learning content, so I can't truly comment on that yet. I'm doing the online program because I have to work and my job is impossible to attend scheduled classes and remain full time (4-10 hr shifts plus call every week).
