Help!
I have a paper due next week on the subject of Human Development. I am to observe an infant/toddler for a period of one hour, documentment all activities, and report behavior as related to the particular stage of development...blah, blah, blah.
I have no children...the professor recommended going to a mall or a daycare center to perform the observation. The local daycare was not receptive at all to my request to observe a toddler...hmmm wonder why. And I can't see myself stalking a toddler in the mall for an hour!
Can anyone provide a one hour video of their child involved in some kind of activity?
Thanks! Sal (Student)
Exactly. How about an evening of watching John and Kate + 8, or other Discovery Health Shows. Then make up the names, demographics, etc.Assignments like this beg for "made-up" work, unless the instructor plans to facilitate observations for students without access to kids.
The professor is a bit clueless, IMO.
Perhaps what she should have done is make arrangements through the school with a daycare for a 'field trip' of a group of her students to observe. That would have been far less threatening for all involved.

My wife is ribbing me as we type...she graduated with her Doctorate several years ago while I worked... right now she is saying "do you really think students actually go out and perform these observations?"
What the hell do I know? I always follow instuctions and follow rules...this is probably why I was beaten throughout highschool...
OK...so I'm going to get wild now...I'll take a run around the house with scissors, drink some milk that expired this morning and perhaps eat some paste...after that I'll write my paper.
Science fiction works. When I was in school we sometimes were required to do things that were not realistic.
Such as discuss with a patient their level of satisfaction with their sex life because you were suppose to treat the whole pt. Or their spiritual life.
I would make up plausable stuff then discuss it from a nursing stand point. In my discussion I made sure that I demonstrated an understanding the role sex and or religion plays in a person's life and the significance to the over all hollistic approach.
The teachers knew we did this. That was not really the issue the issue is can you show what you know on the subject.
The papers and care plans you write in school are not meant to help the pt. They are meant to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of a subject.
As long as you keep in mind that the paper is a means for the teacher to gage your understanding and nothing more you can get away with all kinds of fair tales.
Teachers are not stupid. They know I did not interview every pt about their sex and spiritual life. Heck most of the time this would have been very inappropriate.
Where students went wrong was they did not understand the purpose of the student care plan and thought it was a tool meant to benefit the patient. And they thought that every detail about a given pt you wrote on had to be the gospel truth. Like it was a test to see if your would really interview a pt about sex when their dx was a CVA.
They do expect you to explain how a CVA can effect one's sexual satisfaction though.
I had a class almost 2 years ago that involved a similar assignment -- it was for a cultural class. We were to perform all of these "tests" on children to see what their developmental level was. I go to a large university and we have an associated day care, thus our professor worked with them to allow any student without any access to a child to go there. I know a few students did who had never had contact with a child before.
However, most students had been around children throughout their life (and some had their own children) and they basically just wrote the paper with the impression that they actually did this with a specific child... but in reality, everyones paper was "fictitious". I actually did my paper on my niece who I see nearly every day, thus I knew what she was capable of.
I am sure most professors know this goes on but choose to turn their head.
Is there a reason you waited so long? My school had its own daycare center where we did our peds observations. Where do you go to Church or other Worship center, Perhaps they have a Children's area or Sunday School. You could go to McDonalds or Chik-Fila and watch the climbing area. Do you go to a gym? They usually have a day care. You really waited too long.

Waited too long for?? This class is a 4 credit, first session class which means I am cramming an entire 16 week class in 8 weeks. The lecture is 4 hours each week and this assignment was announced on January 7th.
I agree with the poster who said to watch Jon and Kate + 8. Their kids are about the age group that you need and the show is actually interesting to watch. It's on TLC... you could probably watch an episode online (not sure though)... othewise the schedule is posted on tlc.com
Good luck! Sorry you are having to go through this. Your prof sounds like she is clueless!
If I remember correctly, back when I took Child Development the school had specific arrangements with some particular day care centers where students could go to do whatever it was we were doing at the time (I don't remember now!). That was more than 20 years ago now and people are certainly more conscious of things like pedophilia than we were then.
The instructor in this course really does need to get a clue.
You are a student. All you need to do is go to a daycare center and present your identification (school ID card and driver's license) and explain to them what your project is. Tell them the name of your school and your instructor so they can verify the information if they want. If you are still having problems, ask your instructor for assistance in finding a daycare that will let you do this.

I believe the OP already tried that.
"I live in a rural area...I have shown up at the local day care with a driver's license, student ID and syllabus which did little more then raise the question "Is this a well prepared pedophile?" I can't begin to describe the "looks". " post #6

P.S. These are not my kids but one of them does call me Mommy in fact she calls all women that she likes Mommy not just me and she calls her mother "my other mommy" I get Mommy more then some of the others though I feel because the child and I share the same first name and she likes that.
Now in all seriousness I always found that interesting about this kid. The other siblings don't do that. I always thought her mommy thing would make a good paper. She tends to call men by their first names including her own father and she loves him just as much. She looks stunned every time another kid asks her why she calls everyone mommy and her father by his first name. She always says "i just do". She also thinks that her food tastes better if a woman cuts it up then if a man does it but on the other hand she said that men read better stories then women do.......Like I said she's a study waiting to happen all on her own.
