Stroke at 6.

My mom was just telling me that when I was six she took me to the emergancy room...she doesn't remember why...and for a while it was thought that I had had a stroke. Is it possible to have a stroke at that age?

My oldest daughter had one at six. She had an undiagnosed coarctation of the aorta. Her coarc caused severe HTN and stroke with no lasting deficits. Her aorta was stretched using angioplasty over several years(with each growth spurt.) She now has a relatively normal life. There would have to be some form of malformity of the cerebral vascular system or cardiovascular defect for a child to have a CVA. Could it have been a seizure?

I don't know but there are no lasting problems I don't think there are any lasting problems. Though I do kind of "zone out" a lot. I kind of loose conciousness but I remain walking or doing what ever I was doing at the time.

Sounds like a mild form of epilepsy, have you consulted a neurologist?

I am not sure but I have been having CT scans every year and now am having MRI's, because I have a genetic disorder, Neurofibromatosis, and have a benign tumor on my right orbit. If it was mild epilepsy would something being wrong show up on one of those scans. (the reason I was having CT's instead of MRI's was because I had braces no other reason)

I actually did have a neurologist a few years ago I think. For ADD, before I got depression. I never mentioned anything to her about these episodes though.

I think it takes an EEG for epilepsy, CT won't show the activity. Anybody with more info on this?

JBudd is correct. Seizures are periods of abnormal electrical activity in the brain; this will not show up on a CT or an MRI. An EEG can help determine if your "zoning out" is caused by epilepsy.

my mom just remembered what it was. there had been a black spot on the CT when I went in to the ED a few days after being released from the hospital following surgery. I had been sleeping 22 hours a day. My mom was afraid of meningitus (sp) so they did an lp and for some reason a CT and there was a black spot. it turned out that there had been something made out of metal left in my head. That was what the black spot was. It turned out I had a UTI probably from my catheter.

Is this metal thing still in your head? Is it a clip? Did you have an anuerysm?

Just curious, your story is very interesting.

it is possible to have a stroke at any age. There are several different types of stroke and unfortunately we tend to just associate stroke with older adults. So not true!

Just a reminder to all....stroke is often not recognized or treated early enough, it is true: time lost is brain lost.

American Stroke Association is a great site for info.

Ddin't mean to preach here, just have personal experience with a misdiagnosed stroke at the ER that left my dad paralyzed.

No it was like a drain or something, I had just had surgury to remove a plexiform neurofibroma on my right orbit, I have Neurofibromatosis, and they always have to drain blood. I am not sure if it is still in my head. I do not thinkso however because I just had an MRI and they were able to see the tumor. If there was metal in my head wouldnt they not be able to see the tumor?

My son had multiple strokes about 2 months before his sixth birthday. There are three main types of stroke: hemorrhagic, thrombotic and embolic. His were thrombotic, caused by severe dehydration. He has multiple handicaps as a result. In PICU we see kids with stroke all the time.
