Strike Nurse Practitioners?

Hello all,

I've been doing some research on strike nursing and it seemed very interesting to me. One youtuber stated she made $16000 in two days; I went from there  .

Then I thought about my plans to immediately go back to grad school in Fall '19. So being a strike RN isn't plausible unless I become an NP but use my RN for a year or two and do strikes, while working part time as an NP.

My question is, do NPs have this type of work?

Specializes in SICU, trauma, neuro.

Concerns re: the idea of crossing picket lines aside, this is a supremely bad idea for a new nurse. Like, a Cecil B. DeMille epically bad idea.

They are a skeleton crew (no admin who shafts their OWN staff is going to hire more strike nurses than they have to) with essentially no orientation. The nurses who know what they are doing are likely outside in the name of pt safety/appropriate compensation/good working conditions.

The new grad is NOT safe to care for pts in this circumstance.

As for NPs, to my knowledge the ones in my area don't do the collective bargaining thing.

Specializes in ED, ICU, MS/MT, PCU, CM, House Sup, Frontline mgr.

OP: I have experienced the same as Here.i.Stand.... NPs do not receive union protection within the organization I work. You might want to do more research before making an expensive career decision.

Thanks for responding! I am becoming an NP for many reasons not only to work in striking.

Specializes in ACNP-BC, Adult Critical Care, Cardiology.

I work at a hospital as an NP and we are part of CNA, the hospital's union. We recently joined another union for a sympathy strike. Many RN's didn't show up to work and picketed so we had agency RN's as replacements. The NP's, however, showed up to work. I was luckily off those days and didn't have to make a choice between taking the day off in solidarity vs crossing the picket line.

You want to be a scab?!!!

You need to seriously reconsider how you will be hurting those on the strike line.

We have blocked many a scab van from the entrances.

There is no such thing as a "strike nurse", only a SCAB.

So let me get this straight, because you want more money, you don’t want ANYONE to take care of your patients? Says a lot about your character
