Why are many nurses OBSESSED with initials after their names?

OK I understand.. RN, LPN, CRNA, and POSSIBLY listing educational level if you feel it lends extra credibility i.e ADN , BSN, MSN etc.

BUT i actually saw THIS after the name of some nurse in an article.

RN BS MSN CCRN CORN CFA CNA. Come on people, can we please tone it down a bit.

And if your ego needs those letters to lend some importance to your name, PLEASE publish a guide to what they mean as a footnote in whatever article you have written.

I could sign with LPN ADN BSN BA MSN CCRN CRNA APN.... but i think CRNA is all that is required.

Whatever floats your boat. If you don't want to list your credentials, don't. Those of us who do, will.

I completely agree with the OP!

You will not commonly see physicians, lawyers, or PEs doing that.

And conversely you will not see other professions complaining about others listing their credentials. For heaven's sake, when did additional education and training become a bad thing?

Besides you're wrong. I commonly see physicians use MD/MPH, MD/PhD, or MD/MBA. I even knew a physician who was also an attorney so she used MD/JD on her badge......... not that I need them to do it so I can feel validated but since you seem to feel that nurses are unique in their desire to display their rightfully earned credentials, it's important that you know that we are not unique.

My feelings are split when it comes to this type of thing. When you've worked hard and earned the degree/license/certification/title, I see no problem with people who list them. I mean, it's not like they're lying or anything, they're just representing themselves fully.

What does bug me, however, are the people who use it to boast. Oh, I'm this and this and this and I worked so hard to get his and 10 years ago I got this and this means I can do this... :banghead:

Now ya tell me!

Here's an article from the Nursing Spectrum on the subject:

Only in nursing would an ENTIRE article be published on titles..... the fact there is a PREFFERED way to list all these titles and has been quantified makes my teeth hurt.

Yeah, but you'd look stupid.

OK, so of you didn't know before, you do now that yours should read:

MSN, BA, CCRN, CRNA....

Is that really in danger of being an ego claim? Although personally I'd leave off the CCRN, but that's just me.

Non relevant or incorrect initials should always be left off. But let's not fall into the trap of devaluing ourselves or each other because it seems funny and cute to do so. And don't stand by when others belittle those hard earned accomplishments either.

Ah, who am I kidding....

Mab BA, BSN, RN ......(for now)

Aww why leave off the CCRN? I worked hard for it, yadda yadda yaddah.

the only thing I question is why would someone want to put LPN on their name tag if they are a registered nurse? That one makes no sense to me.

I worked hard for that diploma yaddah yaddah yaddah....besides I think it wold be cool CRNA LPN... and YES my LPN license is STILL on file in inactive mode.

In case this anesthesia thing does not work out.

This really bothers you, doesn't it, INFIDEL??

Nahh not really I. find it silly and nothing more. If people need ego strokes like lots of letters on their name badge.... knock yourself out. I would use just plain RN.... but by statute I have to sign my chart CRNA. The stae nursing board would LIKE to see me use APN alo... I will choke on my own vomit before I do.

Besides I am on call in house and bored. This beats You Tube.:wink2:

i agree, siri.

i'm not understanding the reaction.

who cares what one's credentials are?

i'm impressed by the person, and not the initials behind them.

let it go, infidel.

honestly, it's not worth your time and energy.

OK I guess I will ask the question. If it is not worth either of your time and energy, why waste time and energy responding to the post?

I still think nurses putting entire alphabets behind their name makes them look silly , pretentious and vain.

Besides, methinks you underestimate the entertainment value this thread is giving me.

And as we have explained again and again Infidel that few people use their entire alphabet soup behind their names for anything other than professional publications.

Do I not hear the sounds of sirens coming to your facility with a traumatic amputation that will soon need anesthesia?????
